Google Earth in your neighborhhood?

Several people at work kept repeating that you never see people. I proved them wrong and found a guy riding his bike about 5 blocks from my house.

They took the street view in front of my daughter's house the day after some of my grandkid's friends toilet papered a tree in their front yard. When I showed my daughter, she was pretty embarassed.:D

Steph and I just discovered the street view part of google earth after reading this thread. I didn't know about it, so we looked up our place and was suprised how much you can see. Being able to turn around in the picture, and see up and down the road is incredible.

Then we looked up family and friends just for the heck of it. It's very impressive. Not just the pictures themselves, but that they drove around all those roads, taking all those pictures!!!!

Personally I do not like google earth or any invasion of privacy like this. Consider this is a very good tool for would be burglars, home invaders and theives to case our property. Most of us who built our houses off of the main road did so for privacy and that is now being invaded. Where will all of this hi tech intrusion inot our lives and property stop ? Now all of our medical records will be on the internet and you know they will soon be copied by hackers, financial records already. ID theft runs rampid as it is..I say it has all gone to far..Just my 2 cents.

I have always been interested in mapping (cartography) and have been using Google earth for a long time. I really enjoy the street view and bird's eye feature.

These are satellite based images (except the street view) but before that there was areal surveys done (by plane) every so many years by USGS. these can be pretty cool, historic images/maps. We have an areal survey of this area from 1935! and every 5-10 years after that.

Go to you local university's GIS departments for your local maps.

It's becoming so detailed with the digital Imagery now that even the local Govt. agencies are starting to use/depend on it exclusively, especially the building and zoning departments and tax assesors.

Definitely an expanded reach for "big brother" it's hard to argue your case that you didn't fill in some wetland or are running a construction company out of an AG zoned property, when they can easily pull a picture of your property off the computer and show it to you in black and white, well actually, true color :)

I like street view for checking out house styles. Window size and arrangement, trim etc. It's less intrusive than the old drive by and take pictures.
Bing is better for birds eye in my yard. Street view will never get close enough to see my place. Maybe if they do shore view. :)
The birds eye views will help detect environmental and tax cheats.

If you are not doing anything wrong or illegal then you have nothing to worry about.

I saw the car go by once, but just looked, didn't see me in the picture

I've seen people but if it's a close up they cloud out the face, otherwise they would have to get everyone to sign a release.

As a contractor, I've used the bird's eye and street view occasionally, to familiarize myself with a property.

Well, I did not know about the report problem option but I did think of putting up a sign saying "google stay away" or something. I dont really care if its on google earth or not I guess. Has any captured burgular confessed that they cased out a house via google earth?
