This last weekend, I got the notion to head out to the woods to check a trail cam for deer photos. The snow cover around here has settled a lot, and I figured - What could happen???

Well - Needless to say, I sank my 85 K20 Chevy (6 inches of lift, rear locker, sitting on 37" Goodyear MT's) when it broke through one of the many crusty layers. The snow was about 2 feet deep, and the consistency of sugar sand underneath.

After much digging, and many valiant efforts at attempting to drive it out, my son hoofed the 1/3 mile back to the house to get his '04 Jeep TJ Unlimited. His Jeep sits on 33's, has a 3.5" lift, and an 8000# winch.

Upon his return, he was able to motor right by me and proceed the additional 200 yards out to the trail cam.

I heard much talk about the "superiority" of the Jeep in relation to my old iron.

As he attempted to get in a position to help me, he sticks the Jeep in a snow drift that completely covers his tires. With nothing close by to attach the winch cable to, now he's digging for his life (and pride).

I manage to get the truck almost turned around before sticking it for good, and decide - Enough's enough! Now I'm the one hoofing it back to the house.

I fire up the tractor, and proceed to drive out to the mired vehicles, plowing a 100 yard long lane to the stuckees, and clearing a large area for me to employ extraction 101 methods to free everyone up. A couple tugs with the snappy strap, and everyone's mobile again.

Total elapsed time - 3.5 hours

Having a tractor with MFWD and a large snow bucket - Priceless!

Having the Wife be oblivious to what I've been up to all afternoon - Also Priceless (she hates the truck, and only tolerates the tractor and my many excuses to use it...)!

I wish I could post pics. Someday...

PS - Camera had 3 pics on it...Not too promising for next year. It's been out there for a month...

Where in WI ?

Here in the lower central WI, we still have too much snow to even think about running about in trucks. Tractor with chains will get by with a lot of spinning. Snow with ice is tough to get through.

I don't thinks it's about getting the pics on the computer I think it's more of the wife seeing the situation :)

Yup, sounds like an adventure. These Bransons seldom let you down. Glad you got your vehicles freed up. If you do get a chance to snap a few pics, I'd like to get a look at that snow bucket. I could use something like that.
As far as the deer go, put 50 Lbs of shelled corn out in front of that camera and you'll get several hundred pics in short order.

That is illegal to put food out for deer (in Wisconsin). Cannot bait or feed them. :(

He can't help it that he accidentally dropped the corn near the camera.:)

I live in South Central WI.

Pictures are an issue for two main reasons.

1. I live in the country w/ dialup for internet, and I cannot use my work computer for posting pictures.
2. I don't know how to do it, and currently haven't the patience to learn.

The wife doesn't even know what TBN is...

Our area is located within one of the DNR's "Herd Control Units." Their goal is zero deer, which they feel will stop the spread of CWD. I feel they are approaching their goal...Too bad, as it used to be pretty good hunting in these parts.

My snow bucket is simply a Virnig 6' SS Utility Bucket.

Utility Buckets (Standard)

It's heavy (630# with 6" reversible bolt-on edge), but works great!

:D
And being from WI, you know how well that excuse would hold up with the Warden. :) And their conviction rate is pretty high in court too. :(

The legislature had this knee-jerk reaction to the CWD problem mentioned, as I suspect they felt helpless and had to do something to make it appear they were being responsive to the situation.
