This last weekend, I got the notion to head out to the woods to check a trail cam for deer photos. The snow cover around here has settled a lot, and I figured - What could happen???
Well - Needless to say, I sank my 85 K20 Chevy (6 inches of lift, rear locker, sitting on 37" Goodyear MT's) when it broke through one of the many crusty layers. The snow was about 2 feet deep, and the consistency of sugar sand underneath.
After much digging, and many valiant efforts at attempting to drive it out, my son hoofed the 1/3 mile back to the house to get his '04 Jeep TJ Unlimited. His Jeep sits on 33's, has a 3.5" lift, and an 8000# winch.
Upon his return, he was able to motor right by me and proceed the additional 200 yards out to the trail cam.
I heard much talk about the "superiority" of the Jeep in relation to my old iron.
As he attempted to get in a position to help me, he sticks the Jeep in a snow drift that completely covers his tires. With nothing close by to attach the winch cable to, now he's digging for his life (and pride).
I manage to get the truck almost turned around before sticking it for good, and decide - Enough's enough! Now I'm the one hoofing it back to the house.
I fire up the tractor, and proceed to drive out to the mired vehicles, plowing a 100 yard long lane to the stuckees, and clearing a large area for me to employ extraction 101 methods to free everyone up. A couple tugs with the snappy strap, and everyone's mobile again.
Total elapsed time - 3.5 hours
Having a tractor with MFWD and a large snow bucket - Priceless!
Having the Wife be oblivious to what I've been up to all afternoon - Also Priceless (she hates the truck, and only tolerates the tractor and my many excuses to use it...)!
I wish I could post pics. Someday...
PS - Camera had 3 pics on it...Not too promising for next year. It's been out there for a month...
