Figured I would come to the experts for this question...I have found a one owner, 2000 model, M4900, 4x4, FEL, 517 hours, canopy for $17.5. Good price? I have also found a 2000 M5700, 652 hours, 4x4, FEL, but it has industrial tires on it instead of ag tires. They are also asking $17.5.

The M4900 is closer and at a dealer. The M5700 is about 2 hours away and owned by an individual.

Is it worth the drive for 7 more engine hp? Both will do what I need to do which is bush hog, clean up some under brush, put out hay, etc.

Thoughts?

I haven't seen the tractor in person just pictures. It has a dent in the hood and a crack in the canopy. It does not have a brush guard, hence the dent.

This dealer as serviced since it was new and said it is in good shape. Belonged to an older gentleman and he passed away. Son traded it in on a cab.

The asking prices sound reasonable - maybe not bargain level but not way high either. Does either candidate have the hydraulic shuttle? I'm pretty sure it was an available option - it became standard on the M5700 (not sure which year this started) Anyway it's a very nice feature and would be a deciding factor if the machines were in similar condion otherwise. The hydraulic shuttle is clutchless - where the mechanical shuttle needs the clutch pedal pushed to change direction. The dealer sale/private sale is unimportant in my view. These tractors rarely need repairs and, at least in my area, dealers usually sell used equipment as-is with no warrantee, so there's no difference. On the tires, there are many TBN threads about which type is best. It all depends on your place and the jobs you'll be doing. Personally, I have found that the industrials are easier on the lawn, and make the tractor lower and more stable on side slopes. Once in a great while the ags would give better traction, but for most of my operations I like the R4's better.

I just purchased a M4700 up in the NH area with 262 hours and I paid a similar price to what you are seeing the tractors listed for. I agree with Dick, these tractors are industructable.
The hydraulic shuttle is worth the extra grand in my opinion. The M4700 that I purchased did not have that option.
Lastly, tires and rims are expensive to swtich out. Pick the style that seems best to you. R4's or R1's. There has been a lot of opinions reagrding tires expressed on TBN.

I am going to be doing more bush hogging, landscape box work, and FEL work so I think the ag tires are the way to go. On the shuttle, you have to push the clutch to go from fwd to rev.

Here's the M4900 I really want. It has the deluxe cab/air. Guy wants 24,500. Plus I need to have it shipped, but it's a fantastic unit with low hours, IMO. Only problem is, i want Industrial tires, it has Ags:

If anyone WANTS AG tires, I'd like to have R-4's. Maybe we could trade?

Since you guys have already been through this maybe you can help me.

I am looking at a used M4900 4wd with FEL, Ag tires, with very low hours. $21900

Sounded good to me. Is it a good deal?

Also it sounds like KUBOTA is not making the M4900 is that a bad thing? i mean is it being discontinued because of poor design?

thanks for your help

If it's a cab unit, then it's a great deal.

It's an excellent design and an excellent tractor.

The M4900 isn't made anymore because it has been replaced with a newer model (M5040)

No it's not a cab unit.

I wouldn't want a cab and it does have the tires I wanted.

I asked a dealer for the price of a new one and he quoted me the m5040 at 26500with loader. so for basically the same tractor(4years older) I might save 4500.

Is there a big difference in the transmissions between those two tractors?

I've noticed that people like the low fuel consumption of the L40 tractors would the M4900 be the same?

I have found several cab units for $21-$22K with low hours in very good condition, so I would have to say you should be paying 2-3 thousand less, so around 18-19K is more like it for what you're describing.

If all you'll save is $4,500 compared to a new 5040, then the writing is on the wall- get the new 5040 with all the new features and Kubota warranty.

Thanks for showing me the way.

I think I am going to go with a new M4800SUD instead and get it the way I want it plus the warranty.

The price on the 4800 was alot friendlier.
