Hate to throw out a perfectly good filter if all it needs is a bath. Anyone else here wash their oem air filter cartridges?
The same size filter from Massey costs about a third less.

Yes, Drew, I've been washing the air filters for both the tractor and the RTV. It's very dusty here in the summer, bad enough that the filters can clog after only a single day's use. If I had to buy a new one every time it clogged, I couldn't afford to run either machine! I just use the garden hose, forcing the water through the filter from the inside out. Seems to work OK, but it does take a day or two for them to dry. Now I have two sets so I don't have to wait.

I had already blown out the outer filter and it didn't change much. The inner looked pretty dark and didn't change at all under air. Of course then i find the new inner filter is a dark tan color, making it very hard to see if the filter is dirty. I'm going to experiment with washing both of the dirty filters and will let you know what they look like when I'm done.

Just make sure that when you wash them you don't completely immerse the opening on the end of the filter allowing dirty water into the inside of the filter.

I typically place mine in a container with the water level just high enough to come up to the top of the filter (but not over it), let it soak and then swish it up and down for some period of time (several minutes) Usually change the water several (3 - 5) times and then rinse the filter from the inside out under the faucet. I use tap water with liquid dishwashing soap.

Inspect it after it dries by sticking a flashlight at the opening on the end while in a dark room and make sure there are no tears before putting it back in service.

My understanding is that the inner filter should last at least several outer filters.

My inner "filter" is nothing more than a cylindrical fine mesh metal screen element. It will last until it starts developing rust and corrosion which could flake off and allow a big particle to get sucked into the engine.

I have changed it once in the 15 - 17 years that I have owned the tractor.

Really depends I think if one is in dusty conditions, field dirt, excavation site dust, etc. Big difference than running equipment indoors or out on macadam. And to add to the mix, on their older diesel lawnmowers they actually don't want you to change the filters until some hour interval, seeming to suggest they like a dirtier filter due to improved filtering when dirty?

Filters do filter better when they are dirty ... they just can't be so dirty that they place a abnormal restriction on the air flow.

There are companies (Filter Minder) that make restriction gauges that mount on the filter housing that indicate when the filter should be serviced according to the vacuum developed. Both my Sprinter and Ram have/had them.

I know air passage is restricted, but maybe there's plenty, an abundance perhaps on small hp diesels..., and a dirty filter traps more new dirt?

I always thought I was doing the machine a favor to put in a nice white filter. Kubota does not think so.

The Chinese endoscope seller on Amazon has refunded the purchase price and doesn't want it returned, and since it's too big to fit down a rifle barrel, I suppose it'll sit on a shelf gathering dust most of the time. The seller sent a message yesterday that seemed to indicate that the refund was contingent on me raising my Amazon review rating from two stars. I was disappointed they would even suggest such a thing, but realize that something may have gone wrong in translation and gave them one more star for at least responding, however unhelpfully, to my requests for technical assistance. I wouldn't have bought the thing to begin with if I'd have known it was 3/8" in diameter instead of the .21" as described, and regret the time wasted waiting for it to arrive and trying to make it work.

I'm headed back down to the mechanic's this afternoon to install the driver and passenger door windows and roof mounted luggage carrier. I also need to take some pictures and get measurements of the radiator so a custom fabricator can give me a quote on an all aluminum one. I just hate the idea of using something that I know is going to fail unpredictably, and that's how radiators with plastic endcaps work. Not sure I hate the idea six hundred dollars worth though, and I bet that's about what one will cost!:laughing:

Drew, I bought a new inner filter ($14.60) and outer ($19.71) from the Kubota dealer in July. I know my tractor is smaller, but yours shouldn't cost a lot more. I've never washed them, but will be interested in what you find...I already threw mine away.

RNG, I had a similar problem with an Amazon seller shipping less than described quality product, then refunding me and wanting a better review...I just amended my review to say they had responded promptly with a refund.

Another sunny and warm day down south.
Just went to Tractor Supply store to buy a hydraulic hose and some peat moss. While at the check out counter I mentioned that 2 of 4 tree seedlings I bought died. The manager over heard that and brought me two replacement ones while I was paying for my stuff.
Good business practice will get customers to come back time and again.

geez, didn't know an air filter was like a dog, if too clean just wants to rub around in the dirt a little...

new filters in, old ones set aside for cleaning. 70 hours and nine months. I no longer mow with the Kubota so that saves a lot of filter plugging. I do the oil change once a year and the fuel filter every second year. I have fresh diesel in my own new tank so not worried about plugging fuel filters.

David, I didn't realize you had a rental there. Very nice and very reasonable

I'm assuming that your filter is cylindrical like mine, with a hole on the one end.

I stand mine up with the hole in the end on top, and fill the container so that the water does not go above the top of the filter.

The idea is to not let dirty water from the outside of the filter get into the inside of the filter.

Just moved two chest of drawers and two night stands up around front with the tractor and pallet forks so the granddaughter of a neighbor can pick them up for her new apartment. More space reclaimed.

Also moved the 100G Long out of the back of the van to around back. Just need a hand moving off the forks and inside.
