Tried to get drain plug out of old JD 950, but the head is rounded off and plug seems really seized.

Has anyone tried to drain oil from an engine by siphoning or pumping it out? I had a car mechanic (MB Dealer) that told me they vacuumed the oil via dip stick tube.

The box wrench (19mm) and socket both continued to round off the head and I could not get vice-grips on tight enough.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

They sell a oil vacuum pump used for boats and such. I have one and use it on lawn mowers. Mighty mite I think.

The ones for boats work OK, they usually can not get all the oil out. On a boat the tube usually goes all the way down and you just slip the tube over the dipstick. They also make tubes that go down the dipstick. If you have a welder weld a nut to the bottom, the heat will help get it loose. You could also carefully grind 2 sides flat and try the visegips again. use another pair of vice grips to tighten the other after you have clamped.

vise grips suck for that type of work.

Try some GOOD channel locks or a smaller pipe wrench on it.

Yes but not an old worn out pipe wrench with dull teeth.

see all them antiques listed under my avatar.

I bet 98% of them had rounded or broked off drain plugs :)

in most cases. easiest way is to simple dig up a big hex nut and just weld the sucker to the drain plug. the heat helps unseize it. plus gives you perfect flats for a wrench/

other options include filing or grinding the plug head with some paralel flats to fit a standard size ( no crescent wrenches.. they HELP round off heads ).

lastly. if a flanged bung , a chissle driven into the flange side , usually can be used to spin it around. can use an air chissle too.. just stay out of pan metal...

for the true evil ones. drill the center out, and keep drilling till it's 90% thru.. then weld that plug on.. ir use a punch and crush it in upon itself.

all them work. used each one many times.

I used to try to monkey with pipe wrenches and jacks to hold the pipe wrench.. I now jump right to the weldanut method. it gives success in all but the most stubborn situations.

after removal. do yourself a favor and replace the plug. unless the 'weldanut' job is particularly elegant.. then you can grind to finisht he welds and paint up. ;) ( BTDT too :) )

in case it is not clear, item on left is a drain bug with wide flange with a hex nut welded to the rouded nub on the plug. onthe right is a spin on oil filter laying in the drain pan, with a socket laying on it. probably the one that fit the nut.. or maybee one I thought fit it and set it there while fiding the right one.

A big thanks to all of the suggestions. I'm going to try several of these over the long weekend.
