Hey guys,
I'm building a house in an seven acre hay field. The field is Bahia. The terrain is uneven. I would like a clean and even cut since most of field will be my front yard. I know hardly anything of frail mowers or finishing mowers. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A flail mower can be a finishing mower.

The flail has up to 90 blades to cut grass.

The finish mower has three blades to cut grass.

A flail mower with say 40 heavy duty blades would equal a one shaft bush hog.

IMHO, finish mower would give the best cut (like a lawn tractor), the the flail will be able to do rough work also, where the finish cannot take a lot of abuse with brush (just like a lawn tractor).

If you never want to do rough or brush cutting, get a finish mower.

If the field grasses are too high (no more then 12", for example) and you're sure there are no obstacles in the field, you could try mowing the finish mower set as high as possible.
The field I mow is 3-4 acres (give or take). The grass an brush were anywhere from 12" to 3-4 high. My first mowing was with a rotary cutter to get it down to 6-8 inches. All subsequent mowing have been with a finishing mower and it looks really good. Not "lawn" quality yet, but it's getting there.
So, if I were you, I'd buy a cheap used cutter for the first mowing and see what you have...then make the decision about the flail or finishing mower.

If you plan on just having a nice lawn, maybe you should box blade the field until it is flat and even, then seed it and keep it mowed with the finish mower.

I agree, smooth it out and replant with a lawn grass. Bahia grass is tough to mow, wears down cows teeth and ain't purty either.:D
