Nitro 3 is what I have used for years, no problems adware or other junk! Did you download it from the Nitro Website or some other website?

I'm just a retired regular guy with a laptop at home. Should I limit Adobe updates as well and how do I do that?

In Adobe Reader you can select Edit then Preferences. The last option at the bottom of the list has settings for turning off the Updater.

If you don't like how Adobe is updating itself, you can adjust your preferences like has been suggested. But if you have a single program that is continually using 87%, you probably need to upgrade.

I'm no expert, just an everyday user. My guru suggested 3 programs for security & to keep my computer running smoothly & I haven't had problems, except with my own typing.
I have good luck using CCleaner every 10 days or so, it cleans up a bunch of junk & cleans up your registry. Before using it the first time, however, go to Options, then Cookies and select the cookies you want to save. Otherwise you will lose passwords that come up when you open a site you have used before. Of course, passwords that you really want to protect, don't put those sites on you "cookies to keep" list. For example, Home Depot's site kept telling me "my store" was 50 miles beyond the closest store until I told it to keep that cookie. Usually takes 2 or 3 minutes to run unless you have a bunch of junk to clear.

Another good freebie is SuperAntiSpyware. Just download and run it.
Just google both of those & they come right up. Both are freebies.

Third thing my guru recommended is just to stay with MS Security Essentials.

When the day comes (it is here now) that Adobe products inhibit productivity, it is time to send their crap packing. I hate that they always need to be updated every 15 minutes and that they want you to have a permanent memory hogging program running all the time (if you don't know how to kill it).

Agree. I'm baffled why the Adobe crap still exists and why it's necessary (assuming it is?). Been a PETA for decades it seems.

I've read that there are Adobe spyware and other virus type programs out there that look just like Adobe updates. For the average user, it's almost impossible to tell the difference, but when you update Adobe, you are either opening up your computer to them to steal information from you, or downloading something you don't want. I always ignore everything Adobe and will go through the steps mentioned here to see if it's doing the same thing on my system.
