I used to use the Thrifty Nickle and the American Classifieds free newspapers that came out every week. They no longer exist here. Before that, I liked the classifieds in the News Paper, but those are pretty much gone too. It's been years since I looked at them because there wasn't anybody paying to advertise in print when it's free with Facebook and Craigslist.

I guess it's different where you live.

Most of those are pretty basic questions. It's when all that someone asks is "what's the least you will take", or I answer 8 emails, set a time and the guy never shows, never calls or otherwise let me know that he won't be there that it gets frustrating. If I'm selling a $3000 4x4 pickup in good shape and they're worried about the color of the interior or whether it has Bluetooth then they probably aren't very interested. The bottom line is that I stopped answering texts because experience taught me that they are from tire kickers about 100% of the time.

Then again I doubt that you would drive to North Carolina for a $3000 pickup..

Only if I was already going there for something else...

Needs 2wd/4wd and a vin, otherwise its a lot like the ones I put up.

4WD was in the heading, I never even considered the VIN until it was mentioned yesterday. I would have to take off my tinfoil hat to list that though...

Too late, the truck is already on it's way to Nigeria. I made a tidy $5000 extra on the deal... the sucker wrote the check for too much and thought that I was going to send the difference back to him.

I had a guy buy my 770 JD. He was so impressed with the mint condition. Gave me a deposit, $500 or a thousand bucks, I don't remember. Then called and said he spoke to a buddy, that said, only buy a hydrostat, which it wasn't. I gave him his money back, with some experience of pain. I didn't have to. Yes, do not take advantage of peoples mistakes, even if it hurts.

Meh, what can they get with a VIN? How long you owned it, if its been in a crash, etc.
If they can get your name/address from that, they can probably get it from a phone number.

Just me being paranoid. To me that's a pretty minor thing, if they like everything else it isn't a big deal to ask for that.

Each week I would pick up a copy of the local Classified Fea Market... it was a very good paper and charged a dollar a line for ads... cheap way to advertise.

Never a bad experience.

This thread reminded me of a CL ad posted by a car dealer for a boat... said used only twice and like new...

I called to make sure he had and went to look... it did show as new... then he said he would need to add sales tax for the boat and trailer and license fees and DMV fees... I said none of this was disclosed...

About a week later he calls me and says he really needs it gone... tells me I can buy it for 8500 cash out the door... I say OK... go to the bank and show up with 8500 two hours later...

He says... sorry but he can't do the deal because he has someone coming out to buy it for the advertised price... I show him I have the cash and said what kind of place are you running anyway and leave.

About a week later he calls me and says it's mine for $8500 out the door... I say no thank you and he says today only $8000... I say no thank you as you have already wasted my time... he then asks how much would I pay today... I tell him I bought a nice Sea Ray 3 days ago and no longer in the market... he doesn't take no for an answer so I hang up...

Back in the day the IGA stores had a little publication called the IGA shopper, where you could submit free ads. It came out every Tuesday, and it was common to grab a stack of them and divvy them up at work for later perusal, and you'd have to read the whole thing, which was often 8 pages, as there was no categories or editing of any kind. Since you could only submit one 30 word ad per cycle, you'd often see a baby carraige, a chainsaw, a Ruger pistol and a car in the same ad.
Any searching had to be done line by line, and the best deals were often gone within hours of the paper coming out, as the frazzled seller would often point out, having to field the same calls for up to two weeks since there was no way to remove or edit them, and it would sometimes take up to three weeks for your ad to appear, depending on volume. There were no photos, no email and of course no texts, and often people would change their outgoing answering machine message to indicate that the item had sold, if they were bombarded with calls. We've come a long way in the ease of searching private party ads, but there wasn't the scams back then either.

I rarely use e-bay but I do have an account there. They keep bombing me with emails asking me to help protect my account by providing them with my phone number.
How the **** is that going to 'protect' my account.?
I'll be darned if I'm going to give it to them. Why would they want it? If my account is ever compromised, then I will just forget about e-bay permanently. At least no-one will get my phone number if it happens.
