I assume you mean manual gear changes are grinding and not powershift speed changes, yes/no? '95 model should be a Quad Mod, correct? A couple simple things come to mind if the clutch packs don't fully disengage with the pedal fully depressed - there should be two switches involved with clutch pedal operation. The potentiometer which corresponds to pedal position and the pedal bottom switch which confirms to the controller that the pedal is fully depressed. An incorrect signal from either switch might cause a problem. Another ugly possibility is a mechanical problem within one of the clutch packs causing enough drag to keep shafts turning when all pressures are reduced to zero. I think I have a transmission book on the 40 series somewhere. If you need some help troubleshooting, send me a PM and I'll try to help.

I am having problems with a Ford 7840 as well. I have calibrated the clutches before but can't seem to find page 3 of the instructions. Is it possible for you to share these instructions or alternately link me to a site to purchase a service manual. I also need to repair the steering cylinder. My issue may stem from low oil levels, due to that steering leak and others. This tractor has had a long hard life, but when it runs it is great.

any luck with your problem? my 7840 stopped this evening reading e11 fault code, checked internet past hour and what seems is the clutch potentiometer is the problem, has anyone else experience this?

If our tractor sits for a time, we have issues and it throws codes. e11 is new to me. We have problems with our tac quitting as well and that affects the tranny. A mechanic was down and gave the tractor a quick once over. He felt it was likely the clutch switches. We have also repaired wiring. We have cleaned connectors, we have replaced the pto switch recently. Our problem is intermittent, and may be caused by a number of things that help as we work through find issues and fix them. When my tractor works it pulls strong, steers, and loader works etc, so I don't think it is mechanical. I have cooked fluid clutches and when they are gone, there are other disappointing signs. I would have to check my emails and get back to you. I bought the owners and service manuals, wiring diagrams etc.

Most recently, when it quit I banged the clutch pedal up and down, and away it went again. Replacing those switches is next on our list.

You may have read elsewhere. The lights wiring, fuses, run near the ecu wiring, and the heat from the those wires can damage the computerized side. I had several wires melted together behind the engine left side running up to the dash, or down to the transmission, which ever way you look at it.

These tractors are old and have lots of hours. That the computerized stuff acts up is understandable. Hope I have helped, if nothing else, there are others that struggle with these issues. Gerald
