Ford 1710
Hey everyone. So I have a bit of an issue. I finally got to putting my 1984 for 1710 tractor project back together after rebuilding most of it. It starts and runs great now, but the voltage would climb to like 17Volts +.. So naturally I figured the voltage regulator was screwed, so I got an aftermarket replacement from J&N part number 230-44033 from a local tractor parts distributor. When I used this regulator, the voltage doesn't increase at all. So I figured since this is made in China, I would return it an order another, as its usually the 2 one that works lol. The same thing happened with the new aftermarket regulator.

So normally I would think my wiring is screwed somewhere, but the old voltage regulator at least charged the battery ( although way too high). The new aftermarket solid state ones didn't do anything.

I tried to look up the J&N part number to see if it's for the ford 1710 tractor but I can't access their site since I am not a member or distributor. I am getting tired of this and thinking of perhaps a GM one wire alternator. But I do sometime like figuring things out.

Anyone have any ideas??

My first stop would have been an auto parts store
for a new regulator..

I think I'm confused. You worked on your tractor and it puts out seventeen volts. You replaced the voltage regulator and the voltage didn't climb at all. The system is supposed to be twelve volts. The regulator should drop it to about fourteen volts.

might b worth posting how you wired it?

So I have tried a total of 3 regulators:
Original - Voltage increased up to 17 volts before I shut it off
J&N 230-44033 regulator - no voltage increase
second J&N 230-44033 regulator - No voltage increase

Also should note that I do have the red "charging" light on in the gauge. Everything is hooked up as per the Wiring schematic attached.

I am curious as to why the original would at least charge the system.. although too much, and the other two did nothing.

I am also curious if these J&N aftermarket regulator are wired correctly for my tractor set up? I know there is a earlier ford 1710 and a later model ford 1710 so there might be some differences?

Anyone else have issues with aftermarket regulators?

You have a thirty five or forty year old tractor. If you've not done so, clean and tighten battery terminals and connectors. Follow the ground lead to the frame and clean and tighten there as well. In my experience with cars and tractors the red charging light should only be on when the key is turned on - before the engine is started. If it stays on after the engine starts it indicates a lack of charge. If you have a starter / alternator shop nearby they can probably test the alternator and let you know what's going on.

All that has been done.. Its all been freshly rebuilt, from engine to alternator. New starter, battery etc etc. Just can't think of anything that would cause one regulator to over charge, and two others to not work. Does anyone know of this J&N electric company?

How does that red light in the gauge work? How does the regulator trigger the bulb to light up? The light was on as well when the old regulator was over charging the battery.

On our Jinma 2420 FarmPro I skipped all that junk and just put on a $63 3 wire alternator. Worked perfectly and still does 10 years later.

Ya I might end up going that way. I just need to find one really really small lol. I am sure they exist though in the same frame size and output. I am more curious than anything now though.

I just repaired a 1710 with charge problem:Intermittent high and low voltage. The problem was in the voltage sense connection that has a junction from the supply line ( the red one coming from the starter): There is a crimp junction just behind the steering wheel post in the wiring harness. You will have to cut open the harness and solder or re-crimp the connection. Also had intermittent ING voltage to the voltage reg through the fuse panel.
