Ok.. Most of you know I have a 04 6.0psd for work.. and a couple 7.3psd's for home and play.

This am i went to go to work. was 26 degrees. 6.0 didn't want to start. i think i coulda worke dit another few minuted and nursed it to a start.. but didn't feel like being abusive to the starter or the batteries.

got in my 99 7.3psd.. glowed it 3x ( just like the 6.0 ). started on the 2nd attempt. IE.. roll over a few seconds, stop, then roll over again.

Not bad for a unit with nearing 2x the miles and 5ys older.

just posting for the interest of honesty. :)

Yeah, due to my hurried behavior I'll commonly start my 7.3 without waiting on the glow plugs at those temps...

I've experienced the same thing with my recently acquired 06 6.0. It took 3 times to get her fired one morning when it was around freezing. A few other mornings it started on the first try, but didn't seem too happy about it.

I've had a couple duramax trucks and a 5.9 cummins in the past and neither of those seemed to care about the temperature.

This past weekend, I started plugging the 6.0 in at night. It starts beautifully now and purrs...go figure....I guess they're cold natured?

i just didn't figure the larger / older 7.3psd would start better than the newer, smaller displacement 6.0psd.

( good bats in both.. in fact.. 6.0 probably has slightly NEWER bats. :) )

26 degrees? Try -10. Colder than the South Pole here this morning. S.P. was -6 according to Al Roker. I have gas but son in law has diesel Ford. It started this morning. Cant say if he hit the glow plugs first but I hope so.

I believe the 7.3 is much less compression, like 18 to 1, and the 6.0 is 22 to 1. So while it's slightly smaller in displacement it's tougher to turn over.

My guess is you have a glow plug issue. It was minus 17 here overnight with 30 mph winds and minus 45 wind chills and my 06 fired up. So did my Jinma diesel tractor.

very well could be a glow plug issue. will a ford diesel ( dealer ) code reader pick up if GP's are bad.. and which ones?

If the 6.0 are anything like the 7.3s, the glow plug relays are wear items. Not slagging 7.3s (or 6.0s), as I drive (and very much like) a 7.3. Just changed my GPRelay - on my 7.3 it was recently shortening up the Wait To Start timing noticeably. Any GPR deals with a lot of current, so they don't last forever...

Haven't cracked my original GPR open yet, but I'm told by a wise wrench I know that these 7.3 GPRs have what I'll call a "turntable" contact design - guessing the idea is to provide a rotating contact surface to try and deal with contact erosion.

What can happen is the turntable gets sticky or jams up - I decided to just change my original OE one, instead of getting into measuring voltage drops across the main studs - I could measure a low IR drop under test once or twice, but then have it behave erratically later.

You may have other things going on with the 6.0, but I'd start with the GPRelay. Got my 7.3 one from CranknCharge on Ebay, for $25.

ford diesel, glow plug relay items in john deere starter store on eBay!

Don't know if the plugs themselves throw codes, if you get that far, I'd just ring them out on the harness, to ground.

Dorman makes a decent glow plug harness/valve cover gasket kit for 7.3s - it has the pass thru connectors built into the gasket, same as OE. Also has all the under-valve cover cables, and even the external harness (truck side) connector too.

After a lot of hours on a 7.3, sometimes the gasket pass-thru connectors can get toasted, dealing with GP current. Haven't checked, Dorman may have a 6.0 kit, if similar. (I don't know much about 6.0s).

Good luck,

Rgds, D.

The 7.3 is worn out ! That's why it cranks/starts :laughing:On a serious note,,, Didn't you say that you use synthetic oil in your personal diesels ?? If so maybe that's why, The 7.3 can turn over a bit faster allowing it to start... I need to go down to the shop and try my 5.9 and see if It will start. It's about 20* here now.
