ford 2120
Hi,

I have roughly around 4 acres of grass to cut. I currently own a Ford 2120 compact tractor. The field will be eventually used for caravans and camping.

Which leads to my question. Which mower? We were thinking of going down the sit on mower route as we would ideally want the grass picked up as its cut. The size of the field puts this option out. So what is the next best mower type? We need it to leave as little mess behind so grass is not walked everywhere and left unsightly. From doing some research a flail mulcher looks our best option. This will leave the grass as fine as possible and it will decay quicker. Is this the right choice? Are there better mowers that suit our needs?

We need to take into account the the tractor can run and pull the machine. I think the PTO speed is 520. Any models that we should steer clear of?

Sorry for all the questions, from what I thought was a simple matter becomes more complicated with all the different variants out there.

No need to apologise at all my friend you are amoung friends
here and if you purchase a flailmower your you mule you will be
welcomed as the newest member of the Flail Mower Mower Nation
-the newest member of the overseas branch.

NOW the Ford 2120 is a Shibauru tractor either configured with a two wheel or
four wheel drive power train with 540 rpm.

As you are in the United Kingdom you are able to purchase
a Broadmoor Inc Wessex brand flail topper mower.

The question os whether you want an integral three point hitch
mounted flail mower or a towed motorised flail mower.

The Wessex units are offered in several configurations with the four
wheel towed motorised unit the best overal unit for what you wish to accomplish
(No I do not sell them)(in my opinion) I am someone interested in flail mowers
and have owned them for 30 plus years.

I currently own my second motorised flailmower (from my father)-a towed 48 inch finish cut
Mathews Company Lawn Genie with the pick up basket witha Briggs and Stratton 16 horsepower
single cyclinder I/C (Industrial Commercial) motor with a cast iron cylinder sleeve.

Now the only issue size and type.

I can and will tell you to avoid purchasing the towed flailmowers with two wheels due
to the poor wheel bearing types.

The four wheel ATV towed flail mowers will allow you to quickly and safely mow the area
with little work and time and will give you best cut with the highest horsepower per
meter of cut due to the Briggs and Stratton engines for power with the belt drive.

You should asle to have the slip clutch when ordering as it is better than the friction
pusher type pulley to engage the topper/mower.

An integral(three point hitch mounted flail mower will) operate well on your Ford 2120
but you should plan on having the rear tires loaded and a front suitcase weight frame
installed to balance against the weight of a rear mounted wessex flail mower or another
brand like the Caroni.

The three point hitch integral mounted flail topper is also belt driven through the rear PTO shaft and thenm through
the right angle gearbox to a cross shaft then a drive and driven pulley that rotates the flail mower rotor.

NOW the Wessex towed motorised flail toppers can be pulled with a four wheel drive Land Rover or pick up etc if desired
as well freeing up the ford for other duties.

The four wheel frame allows beter balance and eliminates pressure on the rear hitch of the tractor or the truck/Land Rover
pulling it.

It will not give you a fine finish cut but but it will provide you with a very manageable mowed area with a very high degree
of safety when mowing.just as the three point hitch mounted flail mower/flail topper.

The flail mower gives you the advantage of mowing the tall grass when wet and then going over it a second time picking up
the clippings and shredding them a second time.shredding them even further.. .

I will post a picture of the four wheel towed flail mower for you here.

The ATV/truck towed motorised flail mower has two swivel front wheels and and two fixed rear wheels.

I am unsure of the bearing type but they are easy enough to change to the heavy duty open roller type open cage bearings to have a life time of mowing ease.

Now that is an answer :)

Thanks for taking the time to write.

I would most likely use the 3 point hitch and PTO. So a flail mower would do what we require by the sounds of it. It may need another pass to cut up any clumps of grass. I will have a look into wessex mowers.

Thanks for your help.

Your most welcome.

For what it is worth the towed unit will give you a closer cut as the suspension uses a twin screw height adjustment.

The integral mounted flailmower has the rear roller which will keep the mower from scalping the sod versus the four wheel towed unit.
