I love winter time. I get to spend time in the shop building handy things when not spending time with my wife sipping hot tea and eating cookies !

Last week's project was build a couple 'baskets' to move firewood from the storage sheds to either the shop or the hoop house, where we added a wood stove this fall for really colder days/nights. The one for the hoop house, I made on a skid type base, since I can set it right inside where it will sit during firewood season. The one for the shop, I put 4 heavy casters under, because I can't get the tractor back to the location of the stove, but I can set the basket in the door, and roll it back there by hand.

Basket is 48" wide, 32" deep (2 sticks of 16"ish wood), and 48" tall. I figure heaped up, it holds 1/3 of a cord, and probably weighs in the 1000-1200lb range. Materials to build are 7pcs of 48"x 1.5"x 1/8" square tubing, 2pcs 32", and 2 pcs 40" (to make skid). 1.5-4'x8' sheets of expanded metal, and 80" of 1.5" x 1/8" angle around the top.

Some great ideas here! I've been thinking about ways to store/move firewood in a better fashion. Perfect timing!

TnAndy,
Nice baskets!
In my situation, I would not be working off of a concrete pad, so I'd prefer to modify the runners to be not tapered in, but rather be straight down at the corners. That way they would not be quite as tippy on uneven and/or frozen ground.

Very nice :) Around here they sell the metal IBC steel bins on pallets that are used for tote tanks. They make a good firewood storage option.

WAY COOL, Amigauser! Some cool ideas that I hadn't thought of.....!

Nice project. Seems a guy could design the casters to fit both baskets, set them on whichever basket needs to roll across the shop.

I saw a similar item made on Pallets, where the guy put sheets of corrugated roofing over each one, making a modular & "portable woodshed." My plan is to make some & palletize the firewood, date it, and stash them out in the woods to season. Then bring in the ripe ones.

I found that I'm not able to organize firewood in order of age, I'm always stacking the wrong wood in the wrong place. This pallet bin method is more my style. I like winter projects too, and having tea with my wife, would like more of each!

Yeah, there are a lot of different ways to go, for sure. I made one on skids because I know it's going in the greenhouse just inside the door where I can reach with the tractor forks, and the other on casters because it needs to roll back to the shop center, and can't reach it with the tractor (wood working equipment in the way). But depending on your personal needs, you could customize it to suit you.
