Well, after 3 years of waiting and talking back and forth the KCC is finally going to plug my abandoned gas well. I guess they are all over the state. This well was never disclosed to us when we bought 5 years ago. They came out and looked again yesterday and should be done in a week or two. I guess the process will take a couple of days total. Anyway, I will be glad when it's done. And nope, it doesn't cost me a dime. I guess drilling companies pay into a fund each year to take care of these abandoned wells.

The wheels turn slowly on such things often times. But nice to see its getting fixed.

Is there any gas still coming out ?

Please send details. I used to installed "dry hole" markers on retired oil* and gas* wells or dry ones that never produced anything after begin drilled. Concrete has pumped down them to seal and keep water from being contaminated etc, etc. Or in your case, keep gas from leaking out. Its more complicated than that but details would be appreciated. Gas wells had heavy mud was put down them before the concrete but this is out of anything I ever did....

*many wells produced both gas and crude.

Living in Nova Scotia I've never seen or heard of an abandoned gas well. Is it one that has been producing and stopped or a dry hole? How big a pipe are we talking, something someone/child/animal could fall in? Any superstructure above it? Inquiring minds want to know....mine LOL...................Mike

We have abandoned wells on our farm from the early 1900s. Dont think they were ever plugged, but no pipe casings.
We learned as kids to stay away from those areas.

This gas well never produced as far as I know. The casing and pipe with valve is still about 4' above ground. When they are done they say it will be capped about 3' below the surface. I would say the casing pipe is 12" and the gas pipe is maybe 2" with a valve.

The 12" is called surface casing. This pipe protects the surface water from being contaminated and is something to attach the BOP to. (blow-out-preventer) This is the pipe I used to weld well heads to. The wells we worked on all had 5.5" well pipe which went all the way to, and past the formation that has oil or gas in it. I thought everyone had to use dry hole markers.

May I ask how the leak manifested itself?

No leak, I just want the well gone so the next guy and I don't have to worry about someone getting hurt.
