well ... flooded the crankcase with gasoline for the last time, installing an electric fuel pump has anyone else found a good spot to hook into the wiring for an electric fuel pump? or should I build a ''dedicated circuit'' for the new pump

well ... flooded the crankcase with gasoline for the last time, installing an electric fuel pump...

Just a note; the electric fuel pump will only solve one of the two mechanisms the by which the crankcase gets flooded:
1. Leak in pump diaphragm allows fuel to run down the pulse tube (solves this one)
2. Debris allows leakage by main jet on carburetor, overfilling the bowl and allowing fuel to run down the PVC chose into the crank case.

The real solution is a shutoff valve on the fuel tank... and remembering to shut the valve when you are done for the day... and re-open it before you drain the battery from cranking teh engine too much with the fuel valve shut. Alternatively, you can add a solenoid fuel valve that is key-operated... although that is one more thing to go wrong.

I have a shutoff valve on the fuel line between the fuel pump and the carburetor and always run the fuel out of the carburetor if the machine sits overnight, original fuel pump lasted over 300 hrs, replaced the pump diaphragm problem was solved, the second time it happened (roughly 50 hrs later) I was told the pump body (phenolic) was warped from heat, so I replaced it with the newer style metal body fuel pump and installed fuel shutoff valve, the parts manager was concerned that running the pump diaphragm dry would wear it out quicker from the white residue found in fuel he claims it easily ruins pump diaphragms in small engines. yes, you are correct and I appreciate the input.

I have an electric fuel pump sitting on my bench waiting to install. I was just going to tee it off the wires to the cooling fan, hope it doesn't get above the fuse limit.

I guess I really should install a relay that is triggered by that wire, with power (through a new fuse) from the battery. Unfortunately the engine compartment isn't the best environment for electrical installs. Need some sort of closed up box to keep everything from getting dirty.

You mean you do not want it to look like this:

That picture is from 2007 and I have had no problems. 12V relays bolted to the battery box and blade fuse holders on some of the wires.

You gotta 'splain what all those wires are to. I rewired for higher power lights (relays) and some other little things but it is all buried under the dash. One day I wil ltake that wiring diagram that was made up for us and apply it... simplify and improve the PT Wiring mess.

FWIW: I tend to use marine fuse and relay holders that are waterproof (and dustproof). I hate running down intermittent circuit issues due to oxidized or grounding issues.

Cuts down on corrosion at the fuse as well.

Like Carl, I took power off the main bus in the dash for my extras so far, (Extra lights, and electric sprayer pump), although I did run an extra ground to the dash area, and brought it and the tub ground back to a central grounding with the battery on the engine.

All the best,

Peter

I did the same with the ground as well, Automotive strap to the engine, then engine to engine tub as well as 8 guage ground wire from the engine to the dash. That wire has aleviated a lot of issues with my electrical. It surprises me That PT would not have any sort of formal wire running through a jointed piece of metal (The front tub to the back tub)
