No. It spreads the load out and keeps the stones from sinking into the ground.

It also works the other way and keeps mud from pumping up through the stone.

JDGG That is one of the most UNSTUPID QUESTIONS I have heard here. Fabric is so underused and understated it is amazing. As shown by builder and 2 previous posts it serves 2 functions well. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I've got about 1400' of dirt driveway to do in stone. What's the "fabric" called and where do you get it?

This was taken about 10-11 years ago. It's in much worse condition now and winds down a slight grade (about 1-2' per 100') for 1000' then levels off for the last leg to the state road.

We use fabric to confuse the womenfolk.
As in:
"Well Honey I guess I'm going to need more fabric for the driveway"
