I have to ask.... I saw on a thread where someone successfully used oven cleaner to remove old grease from and engine and primed it. Has anyone else tried this? How does it compare to using store bought off the shelf engine degreaser? Any particular type of oven cleaner work better than other?

I do that occasionally. Works just fine.
To me one big factor was also price. Cheap at typical dollar stores and if I recall but close to $10. at an auto parts for basically the same thing.
You want to scrape away any globs of grease and clumps of dirt etc otherwise you will need a lot.
Pressure wash first then spray the cleaner but let it be dry as water will weaken the spray and even neutralize the spray.
Always water down once cleaned otherwise corrosive etching will happen.
Very caustic however, so watch it.
Also I use it as carburetor cleaner occasionally.
As a paint stripper it also performs fairly well however tends to darken the wood, at least the soft woods like pine, but great for fancy carved type table legs.
Great to clean glass fireplace doors.

I rate oven cleaner in same category as duck tape and WD-40 as handy to have on hand.

Good for working over old oil spots in a garage or driveway, too.

I have used it for my woodsaw blades to remove pitch after working with softwoods like pine.

Thinking back in the 80's we use to use it on aluminum heads in the lab to help remove compasition gasket material before methyl ethyl ketone in a spray came out (paint remover). You have to be careful with plastic sensor connectors and wires as it will weaken fastner tabs and create beakage but was an excellant release agent for scraping off compasition gasket material off of soft aluminum surfaces.

I only saw corrosive mentioned one time here.. Then some oven cleaner reminded me of acid-based and burned my eyes and nose???
