Tractor
Bobcat CT445HST
$36.8K, for a CT450 with, FEL/Bob-tach, enclosed cab, PR tires, Block heater, dual rear remotes, mid PTO, front hydraulics, slow moving sign, plus a the pallet fork frame with 48" forks. This also includes State taxes = 2%, and delivery 175 miles to my place.

This is more tractor than I need but so what....

I asked him for a CT445 quote, he quoted the CT450 since he's got one in stock. I'm tempted to omit the mid PTO and offer $35K (that's max I can spend).

Thing is I have never bought a tractor before so I'm not schooled in negotiating for them. I have no idea what their profit margin is .....

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

If he's giving you the quote with the mid PTO, it's more than likely already on the machine and would probably cost you to remove it. Depending on his labor charge pr/hr, you might want to leave it on

Don't know whether it's installed or not.

He said the tractor would be ready in a week, do to installing the options.

I'm more curious if his initial offer is reasonable?

Not sure of the CT450 but the CT440 equipped as above but w/o pallet forks is going for 29k taxes in in Manitoba.

Keep shopping around. You are looking at the right class of tractor, but you could probably get into a cabbed turbo model for 35k. Don't be committed to one brand. Look at some green and orange ones too. Let those sales guys know about your new land, and that you're shopping to see which brand will offer the best value for your budget. See what the prices come in at.

I know this is a dealer talking, so I'm biased, and I'm sure I'll cop a bit a flack for it, but;
When you look at price of a new machine, think about it this way,
If your boss was to come to you and say... Hmm I think you need to work harder and I'll drop you paycheck while you do it, what would you say???
I think most people would say stuff it, Think I'll go work somewhere else then!
This is the same if you by a tractor, Sure there are people offering bottom basement prices, and there are guys who only sell at retail. but there are ones who offer you a fair price and this will also show you you can be confident that the dealer will look after you in the future.
We all have families to feed, we all have mortgages to pay, difference being we don't sell 10 tractors a day to be able to do it.
Sorry to have a grumble about this, but it's been rubbing me the wrong way lately when people expect to get everything for nothing.
Dealers are the life blood of a small rural community and if they can't afford to keep their business running, then they will ultimately have to close. If a dealer closes, this means you would now have to travel further every time you need a part, wether it be a linch pin, or a drum of oil.
So ask yourself this, is it really best to screw the dealer down on purchase price, or is it better in the long run to let the dealer make their slim margin, (and yes it's is slim) and then have them round to be able to support you in the future?

That said I do understand fixed budgets, and if thats the case tell the dealer that and if he's honest about supporting you then I'm sure he will do his best to accommodate you. i.e. if your upfront with him, he'll be upfront with you.
Also, (and I know this is throwing salt in the wound) if you have a fixed budget, then maybe drop off an option or two that you can add later, this will bring the cost down, it will keep the dealer & you happy, and what's more he will be more willing to help you in the future when you can afford the extra bits. He will probably even give you a bigger discount next time as a returning customer, rather than one who screwed him down on price!

That all said, tell him you only have $35k, it will be cheaper for him to discount the unit he has in stock, compared to getting another unit in, 1.8k probably doesn't make that much difference in the whole schem of things, (he might just have to ride his bike to work rather than drive ;-) )

Sorry again of the rant, no offence intended to the OP, I realise he was just checking to see if it was a reasonable deal. just had to get it off my chest (have had a bit of a bad week with people trying to screw me on price!)

Andrew,

It's OK, no harm no foul .... :)

There are no 'small' business tractor dealers anywhere near the property. Any dealers I have access to are no less than 100 or more miles away. The dealer mentioned in this thread is 175 miles away, in the 3rd largest city in the state. I gave him the opportunity to compete but he wasn't in a position to do so.

Ultimately I went with the largest Bob Cat dealer in the state. They gave me a what I consider to be a fair price. Their closest office is 100 miles from my place and it's located on the route I travel to the property. With a statewide network of 7 offices they're big enough not to collapse from down swings in the economy and should offer continued access to parts/service.

Hi Tom,
Sorry for hijacking tour post, I some times forget the scale of things in the US, over here we only have a couple of dealer chains, I.e dealers with more than one store, the latest in western Australia is actually a JD dealer, and they have 7 stores, all the other super dealers as we call them have maybe 2 or 3 store, but the majority is single store dealers. Besides all that, all the dealers are owned by family's, who run the store. So even the 'big' guys over here are quiet small!

Anyway, glad to hear you got a good deal, you will be very happy with your purchase and may it bring you many happy years tractoring!
Cheers
Andrew

Using the builder on Bobcats website, I come to $38,558.17 for your package. It doesn't look like he's giving you much of a deal, about 5% off MSRP. That 175 mile delivery may be costing you a little, but that's still steep.

I'd offer 34k for the whole enchilada, and be prepared to go up to 35, but no more. And at that he'd be giving you ~ 10%, which seems to be about average.

Went to a different dealer, this is what I paid for a CT445.

Before taxes, a little more than 18% off MSRP.

I can live with that .....
