I'm nearly at my wits end. I love the way my old Mott flail cuts, but about every 10 min or so I have to stop and tighten the bolt that holds the cuttershaft tight to the bearing on the right side.

I ordered a new bolt, lock washer, and larger lock washer. Supposedly there was a bushing that goes between the larger washer and the end of the shaft, but the don't make it any more. I replaced it with a large bolt of similar size that just fills the gap between the end of the cuttershaft and the outside edge of the bearing.

I've tried loc-tite. Thought about finding a way to pin it to the inner ring of the bearing. I don't know. Anyone ever have a similar problem?

Can you use a longer bolt and double nut? By locking one nut against another will prevent loosening.

I'll have to post a pic of it. The bolt doesn't have a nut on it. Its a hex head that threads into the end of the cuttershaft and holds that side of the shaft tight against the bearing.

Bunnyblaster,

Please post some pictures of your flail mower when possible.

What is the width size flailmower do you have?

I will assume what you are missing is a locking collar
for the end bearing by the description you have offered.

Many good hardware stores have locking collars with
thier bolt bins.

A locking collar can be obtained from other sources such
as w.w. Grainger or McmasterCarr or a good machine shop
if needed.

you can use some blue Loctite with the new locking collar to hold it in place
after you drill a dimple in the rotor shaft for the set screw.

I'll try and take some pics tonight. Its a 6 foot model. Found it at a junk yard, and put new blades on it earlier this year. It runs good except for this issue.
