I use a hair dryer to heat up the numbers/letters and then peel them off. Not sure if that will work on aluminum boats though?

Try your local auto parts store they sell decal remover in spray can and the heat from the hair dyer used first will work and remove the residue you can't hurt the aluminum .

Either a hair dryer or a heat gun used on the low setting will work fine. I have used a product called "Goo Gone" to remove residue from metal surfaces but it will damage plastics and paint. My favorite low-tech residue remover is plain old paint thinner applied with one of those orange kitchen scouring cloths (Chore-boy?)

Can you tell us a bit about the numbers? Are they stickers, paint or something else?

SOAK some paper towels with WD-40 and hold and wipe all over the the old numbers, especially the edges. Then get a razor blade and start peeling then you can get all the residue off with the WD-40. Clean up with dish soap and water, dry and stick on the new numbers. as always worked fr me in the past and can use it on almost anything.

I agree with using WD-40. Although I haven't used it on boat decals, this method has worked for me in the past in regards to other numbers and decals.

Assuming your decals are vinyl stick on type; go to your local auto parts store and get a wheel that goes in a drill or die grinder that is commonly used for removing pin stripes on cars. They look similar to an old drill type sanding disc pad but are made from rubber. As long as you keep the speed down on the drill it will remove both decal and adhesive with little effort. We own a marina and use these discs on aluminum boats and the sides of pontoon boats all the time with great results. If using on painted surface (ie cars or the side of a pontoon boat) keep the speed down or you can quickly go through the paint.

3M makes one about $20.00, but it works good.

A razor blade scraper works also. That is all I have ever used to remove them. Use a new sharp blade and care and they can be removed from painted or fiberglass surfaces with no damage. A hair dryer might be good to soften them up and just peel them off. I have used that on windshields to remove the inspections stickers when replacing the windshields and you can just stick them back on the new windshield while they are hot. Apply the heat from the glass side. That would likely work on the aluminum also if you can get to the back side. Since you arent saving the sticker either side would work.
