Bee attack fatality

what type of suit and how much did it put you out? I had a brief run in with a swarm that dropped off a branch while I was mowing under it recently and the following week found another small swarm near the ground. only a few stings, but enough to start thinking what if bigger swarm, hive or wasps instead.

I also got hit last week by ground bees. Being I'm 73 and I don't run so good any more, my wife looked for a bee suit but for the price I went with a Bug suit. I haven't tried it yet but it was about a third of the bee suit. I just wish that was a way to find the nest to kill them. I don't know how hot it will get but I guess that is what lights are for.

I am a 1 honeybee sting and a visit to the ER. I carry an Epipen and quite honestly, appreciate the colony collapse of the European honeybee. Hate to admit that.

I soppose there is asilver lining in any cloud. Yesterday I was pulling weeds and disturbed a red wasp nest. I was barefoot and only hadon shorts. and guy stung twice once in the gut and the other on the back of the hand. Made me knida mad. I squirted them with gas and lit it afire.

This got me to thinking about "dirt dauber" wasps that build the pipe-organ clay structures. We have them around our barn here in VA, and I'd been meaning to look up their role as pollinators, and whether they actually will sting. As a young "city boy" I'd spend long summers at my grandmother's farm in NC. I'd always heard from the local farm kids that they are non-aggressive and harmless to people unless you actually trap or step directly on one. This, in contrast to the aggressive, social red paper wasps that Old Junk Man ran into yesterday. I found this Fairfax County Govt. article online. What an eye-opener. Not only were the country kids right, these little buggers eat a huge number of spiders and have a fascinating nesting and life cycle. american eel As of today, I'll not be knocking down their mud nests until I'm sure the little ones have hatched and emerged. Speaking of spiders, call me crazy, but I'll rarely kill one of those, either, if there's any way to avoid it. Felt that way ever since I wandered into a special exhibit on arachnids at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in DC during lunch hour twenty or so yrs ago. I was amazed at how intricate their life cycles are, and how impressive some of their behaviors, including their parenting traits. I came out of there thinking, "Who knew?"!

Very unfortunate for the man. I started a thread about this subject last September when I had my first ever encounter running my BH over a yellow jacket nest. I got stung 4 times and wound up bailing off the tractor without even doing anything to shut it off. Fortunately, the safety switches shut the tractor off or it probably would have made it to the creek. This is probably the one thing that worries me the most while running a BH.

Today my wife was going to grill some pork chops. And there where wasp in the grill. the black ones. I went and killed them . and moved the barbeque grill a distance. However she just cooked them on the stove. It seems to be a year for a bumper crop of wasp. I killed a big nest under the eaves a few weeks ago. If you can get at the nest. Wait until dark . And make a newspaper torch. And stick it up there . It will burn the nest and burn the wings off the wasp. I afraid my little grandson will get stung. And We are not sure how it could effect him. His cousin is extremely allergic and has to carry the antidote with him. so im not taking chances ill kill them all every chance I get.

As a beekeeper, I can't imagine doing farming in a bee suit. They are not that expensive (70-130), but they are hot and somewhat restrictive.

One time while cutting grass on the tractor, I observed a swarm coming from the ground. Can't remember what they were, but I got a piece of wire mesh (1/4 x 1/4 square openings), placed it over the underground nest, added gasoline and match and watched while they tried to escape the nest. Of course, they all got fried because of the wire mesh covering the nest. I had the laugh on them!!! hehehe.....

Imagine being 20' in the air, strapped to a telephone pole with your hooks securely gaffed into the wood, opening a terminal and hundreds of red wasps come pouring out into your lap and face. Thence forth (in early spring or late fall) I always took a can of phone co. wasp spray up with me and emptied the whole can into the terminal before opening it.
