When plowing snow with my FEL, should I be using my Ballast Box or Box Blade? I've seen guys (on TBN) with a Box Blade. I guess the weight is not too much difference and you'd be able to use the Blade for pushing some snow back...

What do most of you guys do?

I prefer the ballast box. Not so much width to be worrying about swiping other objects when backing and turning.
But whatever works for you is most important.
I switch back and forth between the ballast box and the forks as I move firewood on pallets and have the iMatch system for doint that without getting off the tractor.

And with the front plow, I'm finding the suggestion by some TBN'rs that less rear weight makes for easier steering. :) That is working for me too, now that I've tried it.

If you need to ask...

If you use the box blade you have the option of putting the scarifiers down to REALLY break through any hard ice.
Any asphalt that comes to the surface will increase solar gain, so you will get faster thawing.

Option B;
Just put your slippers on and relax until it all melts, you will have FAR less trouble.

Back Blade of course, myself I always thought that a ballast box was a wasted piece on the three point hitch. Just my opinion though, others will differ but really what good is it?

I actually prefer a box blade over a regular blade when using it as a pusher in reverse. A box blade usually has more weight so it does not want to ride up over the snow piles like a regular blade will when pushing in reverse since 3pt hitches on almost all tractors do not have down pressure.

My mode of operation is turn the scarfiers upside down on the box blade. I then use the box blade as a pusher anytime I go in reverse and then use the front bucket anytime I go forward so in effect I am always moving snow when traveling either direction. This works good enough and fast enough for the relatively small areas that I clean so no sense buying another implement.

I do have times when the front wheels are turned and we're moving straight. I'm going to try it with nothing on the rear...no BB or BB. I'm also running rear wheel weights, so maybe it's better not to have anything on the back...we shall see
