This has happened before, but perhaps to a lesser extent. To my knowledge, all Teslas come with a physical key. The drivers affected are the ones that chose to rely solely on the mobile app. That's not a bright move, IMHO.

The Model 3 initially did not have a key fob option. Later an electronic RFID key was an extra cost option. Teslas do not have mechanical key door locks or "ignition". There is a place specified for each model Tesla to place one's key fob to unlock if the key fob battery is dead. Uses batteryless RFID techniques.

Newer iPhones have a near-field radio which among other uses is intended as a key fob replacement. Not dependent on servers or internet. Have seen talk stating the Telsa app could connect directly via Bluetooth to unlock the vehicle. I know mine does to share calendar information, phone address books, and undoubtedly other things. It just doesn't connect until after I "start" the car.

Tesla hit with complete network outage, leaving drivers unable to connect to cars using mobile app | Daily Mail Online

Access to mobile apps of all types is a concern we all have in this internet age. Hanging onto a physical key sounds like a good idea. My concern is this happening to my bank access.

"The mobile app holds a digital key and and only owners who have a physical version have been able to access and drive their vehicle - leaving those without stranded."

I would not want to rely on Bluetooth security to keep my car from being unlocked, or on tesla servers for using my car.

When you get your Tesla remember to keep up with the key that comes with it so you are not dependent on Tesla servers and your cell phone for using your Tesla. :)

No one “relies on Bluetooth security.” There is nothing at risk using Bluetooth to deliver a cryptographically signed command to unlock one’s automobile. Such a packet can easily be made to be valid only for a few seconds and not contain anything of use if one later “hacks” the encryption.

Yeah, just like a cut metal key?

The deal is that a Tesla can be accessed with the key fob or with username and password via cellphone.

It's Official Consumer Reports Confirms EV Owners Spend Half As Much On Maintenance

In a couple weeks it will be 1 year since we bought the 2016 Leaf. Nissan dealers keep sending oil change reminders and coupons but I have resisted their request for the past 14K miles.

In my case I knew buying an EV was the best way to start erasing my ignorants about EV's. They are different for sure and I hope to only buy EV's going forward. With the new and larger battery we should be good for another 5 years and so for my 75th birthday the announced $25K Tesla should have been on the road for a year or two and I have dropped that hint to the wife already. If my ship comes in before then maybe it will have a Model Y or Cyber Truck on it.

The fact remains it will be 2030 before there are enough batteries to meet the demand for EV's.

Maybe. As overvalued as TSLA is there are several significant very right decisions made from the beginning which makes Tesla’s achievement possible.

First is the Supercharger network. Everyone else expected government and others to provide charging sites for distant travel.

Second is the size of battery and range of the vehicle. Everyone else fell back on the “98% of the time no one needs more than 70 miles” intellectuals who never worked a day of labor or made a payroll were telling everyone. Intercity travel was not practical in an EV before the Tesla Model S and Superchargers. No natter what our “betters” tell us, Americans want to be able to drive places.

Third the outrageous Gigafactory sized to double the world’s production of lithium batteries, under one roof.

The Intellectuals’ EV can only serve as a city car. Few Americans would accept as one’s primary vehicle. No matter the supposed ease and low cost of rental car for distant travel. I know I’m never comfortable in a strange car.

Tesla (TSLA) secures massive order of Tesla Semi electric trucks from Walmart - Electrek

I expect the new line of EV batteries Tesla just announced at Battery Day last week is going to create more semi interest. Increasing range while reducing cost and WEIGHT is huge for weight limited trucking.

A fully loaded semi energy cost is less than I expected. The kWa requirement per fully loaded mile is 2 kWa. 2 kWa is the same as is required for my 4,000 pound when loaded Nissan Leaf to travel 8 miles. Faster climb rates on 5% slopes is also a plus as is less friction brake usage going down the other side.
