Hi everyone,

This is my first post although I have been busy reading so much great information on this forum about my new(old) Kubota B6100D.

Here goes-

The rear PTO seal is leaking and I have a new one from the dealer. Can anyone provide any information on installing it? The 3 posts on this site about this topic don't really tell much and the Kubota Workshop manual I have doesn't explain it either. Maybe I should try the I&T shop manual instead of the Kubota one?

The headlights don't work, but I don't really care because I plan to install some lights on the after market ROPS I got from the dealer at the safety discount price (brought to my attention by the forums!). Anyway, will the electrical system handle 2 or 3 lights? What is the best way to tap into power? Could I just re-run the wires from the headlights?

Thanks everyone,

I can't help you with the pto but in my opinion 2 or 3 lights would be pushing it on a B6100. At least on mine, although the charging system works it doesn't have a lot of out put. You could install as many as you want but only use 1 or 2 at a time. Maybe yours works better than mine??

Did you install the rops yourself or did the dealer do it? I need to check on getting one. Mine doesn't have one either.

You will have to remove the PTO shield and then there should be 6 bolts holding the cover on. If you remove it carefully you may be able to re-use the gasket.

LHoyer - Thanks for info. That was the kinda info I am looking for. I would have screwed up the gasket for sure.

RodgerF- I will be installing the ROPS myself. It came with some instructions and the pictures are hard to see. It looks quite simple though. Price was $148 plus shipping.

Well the ROPS install went pretty well and am glad to have it.

But...

My work lights that I put on are draining the battery though. I put on 2 - 55watt lights and apparently the alternator can't keep up. Does anyone know if there is an alternator upgrade kit for a B6100?

My B7100 has a 15 amp dynamo. I would suspect the B6100 has about the same unit. This may give you a figure to work from.

Well I broke down and called a Kubota dealer on the alternator/dynamo issue. He basically said not much I could do to power the lights as there is no upgrade for the Dynamo. I will just get less wattage lights and use them sparingly.

Thanks

Sorry to say your charging system is not anywhere close to large enough.

I think factory it has 2 15 watt headlights and 2 15 watt tail lights. That's a total of 60 watts which would (figuring the charging system is puting out 13.8 volts DC) draw 4.38 Amps. Your charging system is only around 7-9 Amps max output.

So if you installed just 2 55 watt lamps that would be drawing 7.97 Amps which is near or over what the alternator put's out at full throttle.

One thing you could do is fab up a bracket to install a larger alternator off of another piece of equipment or even a small automotive alternator. Problem is with the small size of the engine the HP drain would probably be noticeable.

Something that would work is to install two heavy truck white LED backup lights as headlight/work lights. LED light's draw very little current. You could just replace your current bulbs with something like this Super Bright LEDs - Tail Brake/Turn Bulbs . Or better yet, get yourself a 4 inch rubber auxilary light mount and install a Grote backup light like this Grote Industries: Product #62401 - Clear, Grommet Mount . Two of these 4 inch white LED backup lights would only draw around 20 watt's. LED light's have a very very low current draw compared to incandecent light bulbs, will probably last longer than you will live and the white ones are a true white light, not that dim yellow type light you get from a regular type bulb.

DieselPower - Thank you for the excellent advice. I am definately going to try the LED solution. I was unware LED's use some much less.

I install hundreds and some years thousands of LED light's on tractor trailers and tow trucks. You know, those trucks you see coming down the road from 3 miles away. :)

Just to give you a idea of how little LED light's draw. I have installed 100% LED's on tow trucks before (all except head light's). Trucks came factory with on average 4 front marker/turn light's, 4 rear marker/turn light's, 8 body marker lights and 6 roof light's. After removing these 22 light's and replacing those with 22 LED light's and then installing another 60 LED light's the actual current draw on the electrical system dropped by 11 Amps. That's right, 60 light's more and the power consumption droped by 11 Amps. Also, anytime I install all LED turn signal light's I have to change the flasher relay's. The darn LED's don't draw enough current to operate a standard turn signal flasher. You have to install a aftermarket flasher unit designed to sense the small current draw of the LED's.

Shop around for LED's. There are numerous manufacturer's of them for trucks. Check Grote, Signal Stat or Peterson Manufacturing. These are all light's I have used and are high quality. There are countless other manufacturers but like most thing's in life you get what you pay for. Most of the high quality LED light manufacturers guarentee there LED light's for life.
