actually naugahide comes from the legs of flys, that is why i shoot them in the eye instead of ruining perfectly good naugshide.

Some does but not enough...so that is why I only shoot off one of each fly's leg...instead of ruining what little hide is there....You are right...good point...but we still need the breeding pairs of Naugas...right ?

My dad used to call it nahogahyde, so I always thought it came from the part of the hog nobody used. Hey...anyone up for a snipe hunt?

That's good to know. Here I've been mashing them with the flyswatter and missing out on a little additional income. From now on, I'll be a little more careful not to waste a commodity

I came across this and just wondered....wondered where to find a breeding pair and I suppose you would need several pairs in different colors...With this nostalgia thing...Naugahide will probably make a comeback...Take a look at this..:cool2:

Once again. Where do they raise Nauga's? Are they extinct? - Yahoo! Answers
I quit raising Naugas when the market dried up and started raising neets for neets foot oil. It has been a slow go as they only grow one "foot" a year. . . . . .

They come in so many nice colors too!

Brin,
No Naugas here. Just way too much trouble to raise. They are always slipping out through the fence, and the high humidity here makes them mildew. ;)

. . . Hey...anyone up for a snipe hunt?
Not yet. Season is not open here. The following is taken from the Louisiana hunting regulations: Migratory and Waterfowl | Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

"Snipe season will open in the West Zone with the first segment from Nov. 3 to Dec. 10, and the second segment from Dec. 22 to Feb. 28. In the East Zone and Coastal Zones, the first segment will run from Nov. 3 to Dec. 3, with a second segment running Dec. 15 to Feb. 28. The daily bag limit is 8 and the possession limit is 16."

In all seriousness, when I was a kid I had a neighbor who worked for Uniroyal that invented the printing process for printing color on naugahyde. Now, he was not involved in the harvest of the hides, mind you, but did know how to make em purty.

This whole thread is a bunch of nonsense...........

I think everyone is well aware of the truth.....

so you can stop trying to pull everyone's leg......

Naugas cannot be domesticated, they have a horrible demeanor, quite naughty indeed, which by the way, is how they got their name. It (the name) was derived from the ancient Greek word "Naugalipticus", which translated, means "Naughty lips" or "bites a lot".
Because of their enormous lateral incisors they must be muzzled after capture. As if this not an adequate defense mechanism, few people know that they have a barbed tail that can be dislodged and launched like a spear. This spear is covered by a foul smelling liquid known as "Naughty juice". This venom causes nausea, vomiting, and hallucinations, should it contact the mucus membranes.
Which brings me to my next fascinating fact......: Naugas were banned from the US in the early 80's as they were found to habit forming.
And that my friends, is why you don't find Naugahide around anymore.

They (Naugas) can only be found on the Mediterranean island of Naugasdosciuos, where the population is dwindling.
It seems the indigenous peoples have over-harvested the population. The Naugus are used in ancient religious rituals having to do with the rite of passage from boyhood to manhood. Most of these marsupials have been captured, feeze dried, and sent to some town in east Texas where there is a small population of Naugadelphians clinging to the "old culture".

Only a Neanderthal would have the insensitivity to dispatch a Nauga...or club a baby seal.

I've maintained a small hear of NEAT for some years. The foot oil seems to be harder to find i the hardware stores than it once was, and so I thought to add a little income by selling the foot oil that is surplus to my needs. I also don't have as many belts to dress as I once did, so the fact that the NEAT are not producing like they used too sort of balances out. Besides, with the years, I've grown less limber, and catching the frisky critters to stroke their tiny forelegs in order to extract the foot oil has gotten to be a labor.

Perhaps I should add a few Naugas to the mix, just to add some variety. I can't imagine one would do harm to the other.

Cheers from Vermont

I am so embarrassed. I always thought that was "Nalga-Hide" and refused to sit on those smelly chairs and sofas. :p
