I've got a Land Pride RCR1260 ("light duty" 60 inch) rotary recently busted a few shear bolts when mowing the edge of my pond (lowered it and stopped the blade suddenly... multiple times...).

Bolts are a pain and there's probably less shock with a clutch, I'd imagine.

What's a reasonable clutch to use with a mower like this? If it matters, the tractor has 30 pto hp.

Adding a clutch just to alow repeatedly bashing blades into ground isn't reasonable in it's self.

The goal isn't to deliberately do so, I assure you (and I gradually figured out how to do the pond without bashing it).

Thanks for the topical answer, are you always this helpful?

You need a slip clutch whose input and output shafts match the input shaft on the mower, and shorten the PTO shaft to suit. If you can't find one you may need to get a new PTO shaft with slip clutch. That might be better anyhow so you don't have both the slip clutch and shear bolt, though that probably would not do any harm.

If Agri-supply is over their shipping to California snit they have a good selection.

Plenty of them on ebay or amazon. Here's an example:

I have one on one of my rotary cutters. I believe it is a separate unit from PTO shaft. I adjust mine having it "slip" when I get into really heavy stuff. I put a white paint stripe across the clutch to verify it changes position then watch for slipping with a point and shoot thermometer. I want to see some slip under really heavy load and cool running in normal stuff.

Should be able to pick up a clutch at your local farm store, most do carry them.
