Got the 3 port relief from Northern Hydraulics on the way. $36 including shipping sounded pretty reasonable to me. As Soundguy said, some Fords have no relief in the valve but as the gentleman I bought the valve from explained, the 1220 used full system pressure with no (apparent) relief in the system. That just sounds incredible. Every system must be capable of overloading itself, something is eventually going to either grenade or wear itself out. My pump was rated at a measly 1900+/- psi and it burst a 3000psi rated hose and split an 1" thick aluminum housing in half. I don't think either of those happened because my system was only producing 1900psi.

The 1900 psi rating is the "safe" pressure. That is what the pressure relief for that pump should have been set at. That doesn't mean that the pump wouldn't make more pressure. I'm not sure what it could actually go up to, but I'm sure that it was much higher than 1900 psi.

When you get the relief installed, be sure to put a 3000 psi gauge in the line. Next to the relief will work fine. Just add a tee in the line for the gauge. Be sure to use hydraulic fittings and not regular pipe fittings. Pipe fittings are not designed for this much pressure. These reliefs usually come preset at about 1500 psi. Run one of the cylinders to the end of its stroke (bucket curl back is usually easiest) and watch the gauge closely. Adjust the relief up or down until it reaches the rated psi of the lowest rated component in your system.

For example; If your pump is rated at 2500psi and your valve is rated at 2000 psi, then you would set the relief at 2000 psi. This also applies to all of the fittings, hoses and cylinders.

I hope this makes sense. If you need to be confused a little more, just let me know.

While the old ford hyd top cover valves had no relief.. they were plumbed in such a way as to use the tractor's internal relief system... The 1220 -should- have been plumbed similar.. IE.. either to use a valve with a relief.. or to use the tractors 3pt hyd / main pump relief... In no event should the hyd system be allowed to run with no relief mechanism. I don't believe for one minute that ford built it that way.

Also.. If your new valve is 1900 psi.. then i'd set your system relief at 1850. ilike setting aux reliefs and 50 psi less than my tractor reliefs for the simple reason it is easier to change the bolt on valv ethan it is to work on anything burried inside my tractor.. thus if the reliefs are gonna get a workout.. I'd prefer it to be the external ones that are easier to replace.

Plumbed in the 3 port relief from Northern tools today. $10 for a hose and a fitting and it works beautifully. No worries now, thanks everyone!
