Another tragedy involving a tractor and a rotary mower.


ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) - An 84-year-old Rock Hill man has died after he fell off a tractor while he was mowing grass on his farm.

The Herald of Rock Hill reported John Branch Jr. fell off the tractor Saturday and was killed when some machinery ran over him.

York County Coroner Sabrina Gast said Branch died at the scene

Sad story. A good lesson for all of us to wear your seatbelt when the tractor is in motion (that is if you have one).

Wow, an 84 year old that was still able to get on a tractor is amazing. Even so, he likely should not have been doing that task to begin with at his age. He could likely have had a heart attack or stroke or some kind of seizure that caused him to fall off.
I just hope I can still walk (or be alive) at that age. A tragedy for sure but on the other hand, he lived a long life and if he was driving a tractor when he died, he must have been happy at the time.

Nasty. It has happened near here when a little kid was on the tractor with his father and fell off under the slasher. Kids and tractors do not mix.
Obviously the 84 year old was on a geared tractor. If it had been HST it would have stopped.

These could happen to anyone at any age. Yes, it is more likely to happen as you age but this may have seemed to be a relatively safe activity within his capabilities. I would be more worried that something would happen to an older driver of a car.

My 87 yo neighbor would disagree. These greatest gens believe in hard work and when it's their time they are ready. My neighbor would be dead today if he was forced to give up his hard work lifestyle. The guy works all day on his 50 acres mowing, cutting firewood, digging with his backhoe, etc. I help him all the time just to hear his stories. He could easily sell his property and move south where his son lives, but I think he wouldn't last very long. He loves working.

I hear ya....my old man is 80 this year, he's cut down working at my brother's factory to 3 days a week:laughing: He called me earlier this week to ask when he should come up to paint my rental cottages My mom just shakes her head....he's raised 3 sons who have become just like him....people guess his age at 65....
I think life with purpose is the key:thumbsup:

I'm another lover of work. I hope to live past 100 and still be able to get out there and work.

I knew a boy who had a great grandpa who was really healthy and worked until he turned 110 years old. This guy would get out there and pound in t post, string fence wire, run his tractor, he'd get out there with a string trimmer, trim the grass in 100 degree whether.

It didn't seem to bother him. He'd even get out there and ride a bike.

His great grandson once told him. Grandpa? Why don't you take a break, slow down a bit?

He said, I've got plenty of time to rest. (When I'm dead) for now. I will work until that happens. He said I might as well just die now, If I just lay around or sit around in my rocking chair all day.

He died 10 years ago. If he would have still lived. He would be 120 by now.

One of my customers who is a utility contractor has an 85yo foreman. This guy still gets up on a 300 excavator and lays pipe. If I were guessing his age I would say late 60s. His understanding of plans is sharp as ever and so is his eye.

My neighbor is in his mid-80's and still gets things done on his farm. Cuts trees down for firewood, slings square bales... Last year he did fall off a ladder fixing the clothes line and cracked his pelvis but a couple months later he was back at it. I think the key is not quitting and start sitting around... He's probably only 120lbs too but that's probably an asset when you get up their in years.
