24 inch forks?

While those numbers are at the angled reference at the bucket pins, forks add a significant length. Go 24" out and you half that roughly. So it would be more like 750lbs give or take. No different than measuring 3pt lift specs at pin and at 24" out. At 36" you'd be at 500 lbs or so, maybe a little less with how Kubota de-rates their machines for margin. Do the maths for the lift to full height you'll be really low at 36".

I've also found that you need a heavy ballast to comfortably use them to their max potential.

As I always tell folks... skid steers and tractors are NOT forklifts. Use with extreme caution.

What tractor do you have?

Kubota U17
It's a B2601.

Grapples are nice but I've migrated away from mine because I use my forks way more than a grapple. A grapple is a one horse use where i use my forks for a multitude of different tasks. Makes life easier for me.
You probably have a clamshell style grapple:

I have owned both styles and for brush, trees and rocks, I recommend the dual lid, L bottom style, this one is called a rock bucket:

Mine is bigger but same style:

I have several different sizes of pallet forks and use the grapple more often.

It's a B2601. Rather not buy a grapple for the logs unless i find a need for it beyond that. Even then, i probably wont want to make room to store another big attachment so it'd be a tough sale.

I've contemplated buying a longer pair of forks and cutting them down, though it'd be nice to have the bevel on them. Cutting and grinding them wont be hard, but I'm a little concerned about messing up their temper. Bummer that the shorter forks don't really seem to be available anywhere.

Porta band or cheap 4x6 metal saw should make a good cut and bevel with a bimetal blade.

For log use, dedicated grapples are just extra weight on a small tractor, that's not needed...

On top of that, adjustable pallet forks are just so MUCH more useful!

You are correct, I do have a root grapple. It's good for brush piles which I don't burn anymore because I chip the brush now. The forks can bunch up piles with out crunching it together which makes it easier to pick apart for chipping.

I have never seen stock pallet forks shorter than 36" offered.

However, debris forks are usually around 20" long.
Naw, the college here had a set of shorties on a new tractor. Sky tracks have them to pick up section of a bundle of bricks on multi story buildings.

A set of forks at a junk yard is one hundred. Cut to length you want after you get them.

This is what you use, right? Well, a similar one. I agree. A light, stronger and versatile implement instead of an heavy and cumbersome grapple. You pretty much get the best of both worlds with one of these.
