Quite a difference in the pumpkins and ornamental corn in only 12 days.

Phacelia didn't work, but the volunteer buckwheat had a good run. Tilled it under, and I'll plant again the last week of June.

My buddy had a similar stand of volunteer Buckwheat last year. His Bee's loved it. I remember back in I believe the late 70's before used for cover crop when farmers were looking at diversifying different crops a local farmer planted 75 acres or so. I remember the scent when in bloom, and it seemed kinda' funky. That was his one and only attempt at it. While it did very well, he had a heck of a time finding someone to take it, and when he did had to truck it 75-80 miles.

Last year at an old tractor/steam show a guy had an old mill set up grinding corn meal, flour, and Buckwheat flour. I asked him where he found the Buckwheat to grind. Actually found it at an old feed mill just a mile away from the show but was between $50-$60 for a 50 lb. bag. And probably explains why he was asking $15 LB. for his Buckwheat flour. That makes for some pretty pricey pancakes.

I'm of Eastern European extraction and people from that area of the world eat a lot of buckwheat.
They call it kasha and eat it like oatmeal and a whole host of other recipes.
I hate the stuff, from the smell cooking to the taste and texture. Even as a little fella I'd try to get out of the house when Ma cooked it.
I'm not a fussy eater but buckwheat and liver are my 2 major no goes.
My father used to plant it as a cover crop in the orchards.
You could hear the whole place buzzing with bees when it bloomed.
It would self seed for the next year, so one planting would be good for 2-3 summers.
I've tried to get some to plant a block for the bees and I can't find any around here.

We used to have buckwheat "kasha" with noodles.
Actually like it, for the one time a year we used to have it.

I can buy it from a local cover crop seed sales but it's $1.14 per lb. WCS Pricing - Walnut Creek Seeds Not sure where it is elsewhere. I tried it 4-5 years ago for a Fall cover crop but an early Oct. frost terminated it too soon. It was a 50/50 mix with Oats to build OM. The plan was for it to mature just before blooming/going to seed, but we got a killing frost 3 weeks before we normally get one.

Now I just use a bag of horse oats from TSC, or Rural King. It will winter kill, and will plow down nice in the Spring, and breaks down very fast.

I wouldn't want to eat it every day but love a good portion of liver, beef or chicken, but they have to be fixed right (browned and swimming in gravy). A good stack of Buckwheat cakes. Pretty much have to go to the Amish country to get those. Slathered with butter, and also swimming in some good syrup.

Have a few stalks of sweet corn starting to tassel..!! But with the lack of rain, it's only 4' tall. Hopefully we'll get a good soaker tomorrow to help things out.
