At work we have a 2007 gmc 2500 diesel. We did a partial dash removal to work on the steering column. Put back together.

dash indicator lights ( battery, brakes, etc ) all work. LED odometer works. Dash illumination that comes on with the headlamps does not work, overhead dome lamp and overhead console does not work.

Appeared to be only 2 large connectors of wire harness that had to be removed to set dash out.

Any ideas on what would only effect headlamp illumination of the dash, but not the indicator lamps themselves?

For instance, insert key, turn on, and you get the usueal red and orage lamps that come on / test real quick. it's just when driving inthe dark, you can't see the dash because it's backlighting stopped.

Already checked fuses.

Ideas?

Spin the vertical dimmer light wheel next to the headlight switch to increase brightness.

Wow thanks, I never would have thought of that!

Oh wait, we *DID* try that 1.5 seconds after we noticed the problem. ;)

Figured you might had tried it, but never know for sure.
Some folks over look the simplest solutions, or not aware of them, guess you're *NOT* one of them.;)

Did you get all the connectors snapped in on the cluster? I would have hard time getting the connection to work sometimes after taking out a cluster on many different cars when I worked at the garage. Sometimes I just had to R&R it and it would work again.

That's what I'm thinking it may be, a connector not mated correctly.

I have an 08. Does it have auto headlights? Just thinking that might play into it. It controls the headlights AND dims the dash.

Do they know history? It wouldn't be the first time in a situation like that, where you learn, hey wait, that wasn't working before.

pretty sure it was working before, but I don't drive that particular truck.

I'll see if I can investigate the dimmer switch from looking behind/under the dash or with the side fuse cover off. There IS a short 6" long maybe connector hanging there....
