It is a nice and clean Mule with about 330 hrs.
Few years ago started to die during work, gas symptoms. I'd give it 20 minutes to cool down and it would run again for a few weeks, before randomly dying again.
Checked fuel line going to carb: sometimes fuel pump would work, others not. Bought a new fuel pump off Amazon. Replaced fuel pump and filter, and thought I was done with it. Of course, when the Mule is loaded with 800 Lbs of ash firewood, it would die on me.
Checked again fuel line: no fuel from pump. This time got an used OEM pump from Ebay (new OEM is about $300). Same issue again. No fuel from pump.
Started to suspect the fuel pump relay was the problem. Try by-passing it, just to get Mule back from work. No go. Since the mule bed was loaded with firewood, I was not able to verify whether carb was getting fuel. I suspect not. Same symptoms - crank crank crank, but no go. Checked and confirmed sparks, on both cylinders.
Back to design board: what else could be the problem? Find out this new device I had no idea about: pick-up coil from the flywheel. Apparently is what gives the signal to the fuel pump relay.
Great, another component to be checked.
I am running out of love and compassion for this Mule. And it seems like a common occurrence, according to my friend Google.
This weekend I will start from scratch:
- Clean fuel tank (yes, it is a bit rusted)
- Install new aftermarket fuel pump (2 PSI Posi-Flo)
- Install new amazon fuel pump relay
- Remove flywheel and check this pick-up coil - i hear the wiring could go bad.
Anyone else had to deal with fuel problems wit their Mule?
