The JD dealer just picked up my tractor a few minutes ago. Saturday morning I was running the 4' KK tiller and enjoying a fine morning of seat time. All was well until everything but the engine suddenly stopped. I had no hydraulic power to anything, including the hydrostatic transmission. Engine is fine, no loud noise or bad sounds, just total loss of power. Tractor has 196 hours on it. The good news is that it is still under warranty. I'm interested to know what happened.

Let us know what happened. Some of the older 4010s used to have the U joint that drives the hydraulic system fail where it's attached to the shaft. I've forgotten the details. Have looked at mine underneath, and it appeared to be changed from the older models, but don't recall what the details where. Think the older models had the U joint pinned to the shaft whereas mine (and probably yours) are splined? It's a pretty small U joint though. Maybe it broke?

Ok, guys, I have the diagnosis....a small "pin" that keeps the shaft coming off the engine and the shaft that goes to the hyd. pump together (like a u-joint) either sheared off or came out. The dealer removed the floorboard and was able to show me where the problem was. A C-clip holds the pin in, and they had already replaced everything, so I wasn't able to see if the C-clip had come off which would have allowed the pin to come out of it's hole. The shafts are not splined, so the pin is the only thing keeping everything together.

Ralph, you were pretty much on the money. Where the middle shaft (located under the operators feet) meets the hyd. system the shaft is splined, but not at the engine connection. Two smooth shafts held together by a pin.

I hope this made sense. If they give me any more technical information I'll pass that along, too. They are putting everything back together, so hopefully I'll get her back soon. I noticed about 10 huge machines in the service bay. My 4010 looked like a pushmower next to them.

That's great news, one that it's almost fixed, and two that it was the pins as Ralph said and not the tranny:D

Could they easily take the floorboard off to get access to the U joint?

I've seen the U joint from underneath and once looked at how to take the floorboard off for something I was doing at the time but didn't end up removing the floorboard. I thought both shafts were splined looking at the U joint from underneath. I'll have to look at it again sometime.

I've a ramp into my carriage house and can get lot of room in that position of the tractor when I park it with the front end on the ramp. Can change the oil in my vehicles with them parked with their front tires at the edge of the top of the ramp without a jack. Had a sloped driveway at the house in NJ that gave me the same sort of functionality.

***UPDATE***

I just brought it home a few minutes ago. The repair invoice said that they replaced the entire drive shaft, snap ring, flange, and pin. I don't know why they had to replace the shaft. Maybe something got damaged or it is just standard proceedure. In any case, John Deere picked up the entire tab, $543.28. I did have to pay for the guy to come pick it up, but that was only $21. It was worth it not to have to winch it onto a trailer. I'm pleased with how it worked out.

Ralph, I did not watch them remove the floorboard, but the shaft is easily accessed under it. It is tucked up high, just under the floorboard.
