Consumers Reports rated this car 1 in 5 for reliability, 2 in 5 for owner satisfaction.
2 of 7 full size pickups. So, to answer your question in three words - You can do better.
Almost all libraries keep Consumers Reports on their shelves. Best to get that library card out and take advantage of some of the taxes you pay.

I have a 2002 6.0 liter V8, it has spent most of its life towing a 10k trailer. Rides and tows good. This is the best era of Chevy trucks in my opinion. If you find one with low miles, go for it.

That’s total bs. A 6.0 Chevy isn’t as powerful as other options but is one of the most reliable vehicles ever built. Even ford and dodge enthusiast can’t find many rocks to throw.

6L is a great engine. it will tow 6-8k no trouble.

I would much rather have this than a ford of the same era.

Agreed. A leaf spring Ford drives like a brick, the gas motors weren’t of the same reliability ( the diesels even worse ) and the serviceability is overall harder.

I've towed a 8,500 lb. trailer all over BC since 1988 and across Canada and back with out ever a moments trouble in a extended cab 2500 GM. I now have a 2015 3500 with a 6 lt because of the power and reliability I haven't felt the need for a larger engine.

Thank all of you who answered my post the miles are high but the truck is clean. Truth be told i can't afford a newer truck retired on a fixed income and will use it no more then 4-5 times a month my trailer is 83x20 14k thats why i asked about 8k.

It will be good for what you are wanting to do with it, just be prepared it's gonna get about 10 miles to the gallon but you can search these forums there are many threads on these models with a 6.0 and somewhere usually after 8 or 10 pages of positive reviews a hater will come along, so that should tell you something, these models are still found out there everywhere, except at a mechanic's shop.

Any gas truck in that era is going to get 10mpg and a new 3/4 ton won’t get considerably better for a considerably higher purchase price. For a lower budget truck a 2004 6.0 gas is as good as it gets.
