My wife may be getting another job that is 12 miles further than where she works now, making her commute about 35 miles each way. She usually drives our pick-up truck, and I usually drive our cargo van. Having a farm, we never wanted any passenger cars, how could we haul farm supplies, livestock, etc with them?

But now she decided that she wants to get a "beater" economy car just for her commute. I know someone selling a 1994 Escort Station Wagon with 110,000 miles on it. It seems to have been well maintained. He wants $1000 for it. Is this a decent deal if it's in good shape? The mileage listed on a used car website is 28mpg city and 33 mpg highway, and it'll be driven on 100% country roads and highway. Anyone have any opinions on Escorts? I usually only buy GMC's or Chevy's but so many people have told me that Escorts are almost indestructible. I also figure at least with a station wagon, if she wants to pick up any supplies on the way home she can. To me a sedan is pretty useless on a farm. Oh yeah, anyone know how Escorts are in the snow?

Thanks!!

Hi Richz,
My wife has a 94 escort wagon. Bought it new. It has 100,000
miles. Has been great on gas mileage, however if you use the air cond. alot, the mileage drops from great to fair. Traction in snow is very good. Only things we have had to do to it is, new timing belt at 80,000 miles. It was not bad, but was recommended by dealer. Replaced both rear springs. Never had much weight in back. Design flaw I'm told. Common on Escorts around that year. I'm very pleased with the car. It has been very reliable. I'm told it has a Mazda engine. Not sure if thats true. Regardless, I like the car. It is a 5 speed standard trans. Rick

Hi Rich, how are things going?

You realy cant go wrong with these, they are pretty good runners. The motor in that one is a Ford built motor, must of the rest of the chassis is all Mazda. It is built off of the 90-94 Mazda Protage platform. These cars are pretty much indstructable. It's funny about the springs. The same excat spring is used in the Protage, and they almost NEVER break. The Escorts do all the time. Must be something to do with the weight or something. Also replacing them are not that bad. I did one in my sisters Protage[over 200k it lasted] and was about an hour per side. Easy job, I can do it in my sleep.

All in all a pretty good, no frills car. No race car. The Ford 1.9L motor is kinda gutless, but they do run good.

The AU and European Escort are a totally different car from the American Escort.

A lot of the early Kia's in this country used Mazda drive trains. So wile Kia may make the AU escorts, they probably used tech from mazda.
