1979 International Cub Cadet 782
Hey everyone I'm new to the forum and I use a 1979 Cub Cadet 782 that was completely restored about a year ago with the help of a good friend. The thing rides well and hasn't disappointed me yet. Yet I'm just curious.. Mine is three speed, and when I want to change gears I normally brake all the way then change it. Just wondering.. is there anyway that I can change it without having to come to a complete stop all the time? As you can see I'm fairly new to the whole tractor thing lol. By using this forum I hope to gain useful knowledge for the years to come.

No you must come to stop to change gears. Manual transmission garden tractors have no gear synchronizers in the transmission to allow gear changes while moving.

Funny, I don't remember a 782 gear drive cadet!

Hey I have a 783 hydro transmission, for 20 yrs or so.

Keep that center bearing in the middle between the two front wheels greased, as well as the grease fittings near each wheel on the inside. Change oil frequently as probably has no oil filter!

I've changed carb and fuel pump and one head gasket.

My attached 44A mower is always a problem, something bending, breaking, belts, alignment etc, it requires a LOT of attention.

All model 782's and 682's were hydrostatic. If it's a 3 speed gear drive, it will be a model 482 or 582. (Possible the tractor has a used replacement hood with 782 decals on it as all the 82 model GT's used the same hood.) I have never had any major trouble with the 44C mower on my 682, short of the original 25 year old one rusting out and being replaced with a new deck 2 years ago. Mechanically the decks are decent if maintained regularly and all the belts and whatnot are aligned right. A lot of people would run in to stuff with these tractors and bend up the mule drive which would throw the power belt out of alignment. The 44A deck had a main pulley for a small (weak) 1/2" drive belt. The 782 model should use the 44C deck, or the main pulley on the 44A should be switched to the 44C type that uses the 5/8" drive belt.

Anyway, you should come to a stop to change gears on the gear drives.
