17.7 ave MPG for the Titan Cummins?

Motor Trend is reporting that they got 15.8 mpg city and 20.8 mpg highway with the Titan Nissan gave them to test. They have a very elaborate test. Using the same test they got 18.3 city and 27.2 highway with the Ram Ecodiesel. I was expecting 25 mpg on the highway to justify the extra cost of the diesel.

Little surprised that the mileage was that low on the Titan??..
Maybe they were hot rodding it even for the hiway test -
there are some of us with 5.9s in 3/4 and 1 tons bettering the Titans numbers

From the little I've read the Nissan will be more of a HD truck than the Ram, so one can't really directly compare mpg #s

Yeah, it's not bad but not that good either. Just looking at the numbers, it will tow as much and haul as much as my 2004 Ram 3/4 ton with a Cummins. It gets slightly better mileage than my truck but there are guys wth the same generation Ram that equal or better it. So my question is how is it better in performance than a 12 year old design in my truck?

Well it does have a lot bigger engine than the ecodiesel. And does not get much different mileage than a 5.0 2015 Ford will do very similarly to that...

Seems trucks these days are more alike all the time. As far as diesel engines go, I would think one of the companies would start offering different diesel engines in the same truck body like they do with gas engines. A mileage engine and a towing engine. Diesels are hard to beat at both ends of the spectrum.

8500 lb gvwr and 2000 lb payload tells me it's a pretty heavily built truck.

Empty weight must be in the vicinity of 6000 lbs.

You can thank the EPA for ruining diesels. The crap mpg numbers wont get any better either.

Yes, but the Ram Eco does pretty well. No powerhouse, but the older diesels weren't either. EPA and the thirst for more power and acceleration are big parts of the MPG ratings being as low as they are.

Maybe Motor Trend was just being honest in their testing? A DI gasser in the same test would obtain about 15.6mpg with a cheaper truck using cheaper fuel with lower vehicle service costs.
