Hi,

I have a couple old cub cadets sitting around and the oldest is a 149. I have seen that folks have put backhoes and loaders on these. While I don't want to do that, I was wondering how people power these attachments. Do they tap into the hy-stat somehow? If I could run a log splitter off it I could justify keeping it around.

You will need to use a seperate pump to run a log spliter, loader, backhoe, etc. The hydraulic system on a IH Cub Cadet only has around 600 psi. Most loader pumps have at least 1000 to 2000 psi to run the loader.

Thanks Merk,

I assume I would replace the friction PTO and add a hydro pump there. MAybe a self propelled logsplitter?

Some of the Cubs had a ported pump. I'm not sure if the 149 did or not. The 1450's, and 1650's did. If it does have a ported pump, you could tap into it's own system, but like someone has said, it probably wouldn't be enough pressure there. PF Engineering sells plans for loaders and backhoes for Cubs and other garden tractors. I emailed that guy about tapping into the cub's system- he said it would work but the loader would work very slowly. In his plans he recommends adding a pump and it is turned by a belt from the front PTO.

I would leave the PTO clutch on and make sure it is a working clutch. I want the loader pump disengage when I start the tractor.

I have a Cub mechanic who considers the 149 and 169 the high point of the International Cub cadet line because it had pretty well reached its high water mark of features, performance, reliability and serviceability. You don't have to pull off any side panels to access anything, and there are no rubber iso mounts on the engine to cause trouble, and there's a simple muffler assembly instead of the more complex muffler assembly used on the 1250-1650 series and later models.

THanks guys,

My problem is I have too many other projects going at the moment so this 149 is probably going to sit out in the woods for awhile, but I do have some hydraulic junk laying around so who knows.

How can I sneak the cub back in the barn without the wife noticing?

My first Cub was a 149, used. I ran it for about 10 years without much trouble.
A fine piece of engineering!
