Rotary Cutter 10 ft rotary cutter and 40hp tractor

I have an MX10 3pt on some pretty serious hills in pa. I have cut 4-5' tall grass (over the top of the rear tires) and it was slow going/burnt alot of fuel with 69pto hp. 3pt is absolutely outta the question, my hydraulics do it but its very noticeable and not fun to road with the rear tires on the mower off the ground. A semi mount would also most likely be out of the question as well since it will be a cat2 pin I would assume. If you can find a trail behind it MIGHT work ok. I'd suggest borrowing/renting it to try it if your dead set on it. You never know, if its thin grass it may work out splendidly. I would be extremely leery of dragging it around on any hills or soft areas. I would make sure you have as much weight on the front of your machine as you could to offset the heavy tongue load I'm sure a mower of that size is going to have. (assuming a long tongue for making tighter turns with a larger tractor)


I might also suggest mowing it a time or two with your 6 footer to make sure there are no hidden suprises to cause some serious problems. Might also want to budget for a pto clutch repair in the purchase decision.

Monthly basis..? Ten foot - HD cutter? Nah; you'll have the pto clutch burned out by fall! But... if it's sooooo flat and the grass is thin and spindly - rent a 8 finish mower and give it a shot! Set the wheels down as low as you can - cutter high - and go for it!

At least the belts will spin (maybe smoke..) before the pto clutch starts slipping. :thumbsup:

I really don't think you'd save as much time as you think you would.

Even if you did use a 10' cutter, you are going to have to travel MUCH slower than you can travel with the 6'er. It's more a function of power, rather than width of mower.

You can either mow really really slow with a 10' cutter, while stressing and pushing your tractor to the max, or you can mow quicker and more efficiently with a properly sized, smaller cutter.

Keep in mind, the conditions will be as optimum as possible for the equipment I am asking about. Short, thin grass on perfectly flat terrain with a pull type cutter. However, some of you believe I will smoke the pto clutch even if the cutter is rated for minimum 40 pto hp? Am I understanding this correctly?

Try it out if you are within the design specs of the mower.
Or, see if you can "demo" the mower.

You could upgrade the tractor later, although if upgrading, you might also consider a larger batwing mower.

First off, you don't have nearly enough power for even light cutting. We pull a twin spindle 10' cutter behind a 65 PTO hp Deere and it is a good match, really wouldn't consider anything less. Secondly, you are talking about a compact tractor, not a full-size utility tractor, I think it will be very hard on the drivetrain, PTO clutch, and drawbar (a lot of those 10' cutters weigh close to 4000lbs with plenty of tongue weight.) Even if you are able to pull it you won't be going fast enough to make up the difference. A 10' mower pulled at 3mph is going to cut exactly the same acres per hour as a 6' mower pulled at 5mph (2.7ac/hr assuming 75% efficiency.)

Keep in mind that it takes less pto hp to run a pull type mower than a 3pt. A Kodiak 10' pull type needs a minimum of 42hp @ the pto where a 3pt 10' needs 52hp @ the pto. {specs are from the Kodiak web site}

you are spinning the same gearboxes.. nt mouch difference except on locomotion.. i think that info is a tad misleading.. geared more towards the fact that a 52pto hp tractort is physically larger than a 39 pto hp tractor in most general senses... and that's what i'd want with a 10' mower.. physical bulk on a tractor.. me anyway..

with your tractor id step up to an 8ft pull type shreddder.as that will be all your tractor wants,an its all you really need.
