If I replace an axle(s) on a trailer I'll always replace with torsion. Less maintenance and a lot quieter. I have several trailers in both styles. I wouldn't worry about one axle temporarily taking all the weight. If you aren't stupid and are careful you will be ok.

I have a homemade dedicated trailer mover for the 3 point. A 2" ball works quite well for moving both 2" and 2 5/16" trailers. As mentioned a 3 point has no hold down anyways.

If you build a ballast box make sure you make it as close to the tractor as you can. It's a lot easier to maneuver in tight spots. Also build it so that you can remove it by just setting it on the ground. I made mine so that I need to use some blocks of wood to set it on. I won't do that again.

I would venture to say that the compression test is ok. Compression tests are supposed to be done on warm engines. Since the OP couldn't get the engine running it was done cold. Therefor low compression. If the tractor started right up like he said the compression is good enough.

Check to see if all 4 of your pulleys are running true. If one is offset a bit it could make the belt flop around.
