Most pilot hydraulic systems on CE I have been involved with have a pilot filter on the supply side. You don’t want crud getting into a joystick.

    Craftsman GT5000 Reliability?

The AYP built Craftsman GT tractors are decent tractors for the money. And are fairly tough. Wear parts are available, some of the proprietary parts can be a bit harder to find. The Briggs engines have a mixed reputation. The Kohlers are decent, tho they can have head gasket issues if they are...

Good morning. 48° now and just got done raining again. Maybe 53° or so today. Survived all the storms last night. Rain and distant thunder was all we got. Other parts of Ohio weren’t as lucky. Not sure what I will get not today, but will find something. Everyone stay safe out there

Importing and modifying a new mini excavator from China

That is the downside of a simple system. IME, swing tends to run at a lower pressure than system. And the cushion runs even lower. But the valving involved is far more complex than is easily available to us. since the primary purpose is to protect the swing motor and gears, my guess is about...

I have been planning on adding a crossover relief to my QH12 since I got it. I was surprised the motor doesn’t have some sort of port reliefs. The pics of broken bits on FB makes me more determined to make the change. You May find best settings for the reliefs will be below system relief settings.

I do need to get some metric caps and plugs. My first foray into getting metric fittings did not go smoothly. So ended up getting only what I needed. Next order will have a bit more on it. The lack of grease fittings on the grapple is a concern. Have an idea to try, but not sure it will work...

Importing and modifying a new mini excavator from China

Suction strainers keep lost sockets in the hydraulic tank from getting into the pump, little more. You need a full flow return line filter, 10 micron rated. Installing a Zinga style filter yourself aids in finding replacement element.

    Backhoe problem

That rod failure is a mechanical issue with the backhoe. Either the stops are poorly located or the geometry sucks. The backhoe should mechanically stop swinging before the cylinder bottoms. If it doesn’t, you bend rods or pop pistons off the rod. It may be a design issue or a manufacturing...

What's the purpose of a bypass on a cylinder?

Some cylinders have both ports located near each other to simplify hose routing. The tube is used to supply oil to the other end of the cylinder. You will also see tubes welded on when the cylinder has a block on it for a holding valve.

Importing and modifying a new mini excavator from China

That pump really looks like it has an unloaded in it. The hex sticking out of the middle is likely the unloaded valves. Hydraulics work best with the engine at full RPM. Or at some specified RPM in the operator manual. It may be at low RPM, there is insufficient flow to swing the boom correctly. Good morning!!!!

Condolences Don. RIP Whipper. Good morning! 38° now and sunny. High is supposed to be 52° today. Forecast says more high winds starting tomorrow. Could have gusts of 60+ MPH. Supposed to continue into Saturday. So likely power outages again. Some still don’t have power restored from last...

Excavator boom swings and drops too fast

Likely the orifices you saw were orifice checks that were port options in the valve. The checks allowed free flow in one direction, restricted flow in the other. Most circuits using orifices are typically installed to allow exhaust metering, especially on circuits that gravity can affect, like...

    Good morning!!!!

Good morning! 46° now, high of maybe 52° today. Drizzling right now. Yesterday was nice. Worked on plans for a project then did some bike maintenance. Took the race bike up the road to verify the shift linkage works correctly. It is vastly better than it was. Also watched the power company...

Good evening! 46° now, was as high as 66° earlier. Been extremely windy today. Gusts up to 45. Power has been out several times, longest was over an hour. Went to get gas just in case, got the gas, but couldn’t pay. The system was down. Good thing they know me, have to stop in tomorrow. We...

    Good morning!!!!

I already went to the Winter Throwdown in FL in January. That has become a must attend event. Riders better bring their A game! I will attend more. My wife wants to go to the AFT race in WV. That should be a fast one at WVMS. I may go to Lima as well. Stay tuned, one of the twins riders asked...

    Hydraulic divider question

Here is a link to the operation of a Prince priority flow divider. S roll down to the info on the RD-400-R https://www.baileyhydraulics.com/pdf/ValvesRd500.pdf

    Hydraulic divider question

Did you look at your tractor’s hydraulic schematic or service manual? That should show you the location of the standard relief valve. If it is at the pump, then you are good to go. If not, then you need a relief between the pump and priority flow divider.
  130. Rich B1

    Good morning!!!!

Good morning! 30° now, predicted high is 39° or so. Big change from yesterday’s 71°! We have had some snow this winter, but maybe 1” was the most we had at any one time. And that was gone in days. But March has had some big snows in the past, so not time to put the snow blower away yet. Many...

Adding power steering & power beyond plumbing question

If you don’t know if your tractor has a relief at the pump and you don’t know if you have a relief in your priority valve, then you need to add a relief valve! It needs to be between the pump and priority valve inlet. It needs to be set above your FEL, steering, and 3PH relief. I would be at 150...

    Good morning!!!!

Good morning! 43° partly sunny. Drizzled this morning. Supposed to get to 47° later. Then warmer next couple of days. That actually does work on the iPad to get the ° symbol…..thanks! Not sure what today will bring. Take it as I find something to get into. Wife finally sold the old claw foot...
  134. Rich B1

Adding power steering & power beyond plumbing question

Check your tractor for the relief location. Many have a relief at the pump. If it does, then you don’t need to add a relief. If it located somewhere else on the tractor, then you need a relief between the pump and flow divider.
  135. Rich B1

Adding power steering & power beyond plumbing question

I would install the priority flow divider between the pump and FEL valve. Your steering should have hydraulic priority over anything else. The sacrifice in FEL speed is minor compared to loss of steering when you inadvertently activate the FEL while moving and steering. And it will happen.
  136. Rich B1

Does anyone know if there is a replacement for this flow valve

Looks like an orifice check, allows free flow in one direction, restricted in the other. Likely made by the valve manufacturer to Ford’s spec. If you have a part number, you could do a search For one or try a salvage yard. The simplest way around it if you can’t find an original is the...

    TODAY'S GUN TIME

Selecting a carry gun/caliber from an Internet forum is sort of dicey. Everyone has an opinion, just like 5hey have an a**hole. My recommendation….find what you are comfortable with. No one can tell you what feels right to you.

What to use Carry-All for (other than carry-all)

I used to thing I wanted a carry all, but could also find a lot of reason I didn’t need/want one. But there was still times I could use one. IME, hydraulic lines typically are rated for 4X working pressure for normal operation and 10X working pressure for burst pressure. Pumps and pump drives will fail before the line. Hydraulic Flow Control Advice Needed

You can restrict either flow or return, but IME, restricting return works best. This allows you to...
