replacing engine oil filter every change

So many things affect the life of oil, mainly your driving conditions. I remember doing 3,000 mile oil changes religiously. Got busy, drove 8,500 miles. Lightning strike, well pump box failed

In the NorthEast, we routinely see exactly that, pumps set to 600' with water levels that range from 50 to 600'. Interesting concept with two of them. High back pressure shouldn't do harm to the pump, unless you overload the thrust bearing. Head pressure on the pump probably doesn't drop the...

I don't think they are field adjustable. If I was going to use them, I think it would be in the well, not in the house. I worry about the excessive back pressure they put on the trench line.
  16. S

Lightning strike, well pump box failed

Higher pressure will make the pump draw lower amps, seems contrary, but it's true. If you raise the pressure on the switch, the air charge in the tank should also be increased. Mr. Valveman, what happens if you take a 50 psi CSV and set the pressure to 70 psi? If I think it thru, that should be...

The remote pump house is a great idea, but seems kinda extreme. Joints are definately a point of failure. 90's and couplings underground should be avoided. Use only SS or brass fittings, not plastic or steel. All the lines coming to a central point, into the house or pump house gives you the...

Lightning strike, well pump box failed

Do not install filters before your tank. Install the largest tank you can. The 26 gallon tank will give you 8 or so gallons of draw down. X-Trol tanks are not what they used to be. I see far too many go back under warrenty. Don't buy from a box store. We install hundreds of Flexcon tanks every year.

Lightning strike, well pump box failed

We see water coming out of the Schrader valve frequently, it usually takes the pump out with it. Ignoring a bad tank will cost you both a pump and a tank

Lightning strike, well pump box failed

Fuddy, I'm worried about a 5 second run time. Something is wrong, and it's real bad for the system. Pumps like to run.
  25. S

Lightning strike, well pump box failed

Almost every component of the system has a limited number of on/off cycles. Long run times are great for well pumps. BUT, they have to be moving water. The motor manufacturer wants 1/4 of a foot per second of water flow past the motor to keep it cool.

Since we are talking about excavators: Chinese Mini X vs. Subframe backhoe on tractor.

I didn't mean to compare the two, just stating what I bought. Tractor backhoes are very limited in what they can do. However, as stated, they have no ground speed and you can't put a plate on them to go help a neighbor.
  55. S

Since we are talking about excavators: Chinese Mini X vs. Subframe backhoe on tractor.

A mini X will far outperform a tractor back hoe. Very recently I thought about a backhoe for the tractor, figured if I was going in for the backhoe, I might as well buy a mini. Ended up with a Wacker Neuson 7500 pound machine.

  61. S

    Sno-pusher or 3-Point Rear Blade?

A pusher works so much better than a bucket. It will hold way more snow and when yo gt to the end, it's just pick up the pusher and back up. With the bucket, you have to raise the bucket, dump the bucket and shake it, then reposition it and back up. The pusher is much more fluid. All of that...
  62. S

    Mid mount or 3PH mower?

I don't expect clearance to be an issue. If available, I'll get the mid pto regardless of the mower. Good point, if the mid pto is not an option, kinda does away with the mmm option. Bucket in the winter for snow removal close to the garage. I will keep my TYM 654 for the big stuff.

    Mid mount or 3PH mower?

So, I'm looking at a 25 hp, cab tractor for the lawn and light snow removal. Looking for pros and cons of a belly mower vs a 3 ph. Deep well / tank question

You don't need the system to automatically add air if you do it periodically with an air compressor. If you add a schrader valve to the check valve before the tank, it has to have a light spring in it so it will open under a vacuum. The bleeder in the well opens when it is not under pressure...

Well worded and probably correct. In the Northeast, we've been captive air tanks for a long time, but when I was a kid, we still had galvanized tanks and air releases.
  86. S

What is causing air in house water lines?

I suspect the water heater also. The new water heaters come turned up so high, they "make" air. With an air release on the cold water tank (if it's working properly) it should bleed any excess air coming from the well side. Keep an eye on the water level in the tank. It will vary depending on...

    Well Pump Expansion Tank

So, 946 pounds of pressure on a single check valve?? You and I don't work in the same world. Most check valves are designed to be operated int he full open position, not partially open. VFD check valves being the exception, but who uses a VFD check valve with a Cycle stop?
  99. S

    Well Pump Expansion Tank

Most pump manufactures build a check valve on top of the pump, but that's not a great place for it, it should be at least a foot above the pump, but that's not very practicle most of the time. One every 200'. If that's 4, then it's 4.
  100. S

    Well Pump Expansion Tank

What leads you to believe he has a 10 gpm pump? Is it a Franklin 3200 series, or 4400 series? The check valve manufacturers, the motor manufacturers and the pump manufacturers recommend a check valve every 200', or every 100 psi (actually 231').
  101. S

    Well Pump Expansion Tank

A 5 gpm, 1 hp pump stops pumping at about 660', so a 2 hp should do just fine depending on the series. 3 phase motor will run better, but will not reduce power consumption, might even be a little worse because of the phase conversion from single to three phase. Check valves should be installed...

  110. S

Do you merge sooner, or later?

The zipper method does not mean you get to fly to the end of the closed lane then expect someone to slam on their brakes to let you in. The zipper method means when they post a lane closure, you look for a hole, or make a hole (if you're in the thru lane) and start to merge.

I know their VFD's don't like them, or at least didn't, but there have been a lot of changes since I last asked...

    Quick Hitch Adapters

I gave up on the quick hitch. Seemed like every time I changed implements it was either put it on, or take it off. Plus, some of the implements that were supposed to be compatible were not. It was more work than it was worth.

    Dock strike/Toilet paper shortage??

I find it interesting that they want a VERY good pay check, $177,000 per year and a promise that they won't automate their jobs. I would think they would say "we'll take a pay cut if you don't automate our jobs." Fire them all and built the robots. The reason the kid at McDonalds gets $20 bucks...

I had an economy rake (different brand) and used it about 1200' (yes, I measured it). It was bent like a smiley face and some of the tines were bent like they didn't make them out of spring steel. The manufacturer said I put too much down pressure on it (I can't control that, it's a gravity...

My problem with my PTO generator was, if I wasn't home, I could never walk the wife thru how to hook it up and use it. Last time i used it, my wife asked "why can't we have a real generator?" I said ten thousand dollars. We've installed a 22 kW diesel, it was more like 30 grand by the time I was...

Recently at the office, we changed everything over to either 2 5/16 or pintle. I had my guys set all their hitches to the same height so the trailers would always be dropped at the same height and we weren't adjusting trailers all the time to hook up.

Need help finding a water well part

If you're referring to the check valve, it's called a control center check. There is a bleeder in the well that opens when the pressure goes down, after the pump shuts off. The schrader valve opens and lets air in, back down to the bleeder. When the pump starts, the bleeder closes and the air is...

Set my grapple on top of a storage container, 8' up and forgot to unhook the hydraulic lines. Fortunately I saw it before I dragged the grapple of the top. That could have been nasty. Torn the lines off, or worse have the grapple swing into the tractor if the lines held.

    Warm up

I let mine run long enough to get the fluids moving (not long), then it's on light duty until I think it's warmed up (I don't have a temp gauge, who builds a 65 hp tractor without a temp gauge?), but I rarely put much of a load on my tractor. Snow removal being the exception.

    TYM 654 dashboard

I mentioned it to the dealer, they said everything was normal. Do you guys have glow plug lights that come on? 4 wheel drive indicator lights?
  170. S

    TYM 654 dashboard

Questions about my dash. I have no temp gauge, should I? All my idiot lights come on when I cycle the key, but none ever come on during operation. Glow plugs at start up, pto, 4 wheel drive, anything else that might come on during operation. No speedometer. No forward reverse indicator.

    Rookie tractor buyer neds advice

When you buy a tractor, the dealer you buy from is just as important as the brand you buy. I find it hard to compare tractors. They all seem pretty good these days. Landscape Rake

My dealer refunded 100% of my money. Ironcraft would not back them up. I have pictures, but don't know how to post them. I replaced it with a Landpride that was 3.5 times more money. I figured a rake was a rake. Nope.

It's a Pentek 4.5 x 20. Capacity of 1850 grains. I also run a water softener cartridge before it. I think the D.I. cartridges are over $100, so you want the water as clean as possible going into it, hence the softener cartridge first.
