    PJ trailer modification, any problems?

Rental yards have small and fairly heavy duty trailers for stump grinders. I have no idea where they buy them. Every single one of my trailers stay outside. It’s not the optimal thing sure but it would cost half a million dollars to build a building big enough to park them all inside and they...

Homes… Your Thoughts… Old or New?

But how is even the laziest inspector worse than no inspections at all? At least most people design the build with inspections in mind...

Anyone use Sch 80 PVC for air lines?

How much is your eyesight worth? If you don’t have the cash just drag an airline from the compressor.

Anyone use Sch 80 PVC for air lines?

The working pressure of pvc is well above the compressor pressure. It works fine until it doesn’t. PVC can violently explode especially when it’s old and brittle. I’d use a different pipe.

Homes… Your Thoughts… Old or New?

I’m a contractor and as far as I’m concerned the idea that old houses are better is completely rubbish. Even the “good” ones that are left which were probably in the top .5 percent of quality in their day are so loose that heating cost a fortune and likely didn’t have plumbing, electricity or HVAC in the original construction. People make comparisons of the cost then vs now which I agree cost has...

What to look for in a Skid Steer.

I somewhat disagree. I have a 30,000 pound dozer and it will do more work in 5 minutes than a skid steer will in an hour but an old school track loader is a hard beast to tame. I had a 955 track loader for about a month and decided it wasn’t for me. A rear engine track loader with HST drive...

What to look for in a Skid Steer.

Skid steers have a lot of parts crammed in a small package. Which ones aren’t hard to work on? I’d like to know so I can go buy one.

What to look for in a Skid Steer.

A skid steer with a stump bucket would beat the heck out of the tractor backhoe. A large frame CTL with a stump bucket actually works fairly well it’s just not what I would buy to do the work.
  21. 4570Man

What to look for in a Skid Steer.

Not true. I paid a notable amount less for my new KX040 than I did my 75-3. I wouldn’t buy a 40 for taking down 20” trees either. It would work especially for poplar trees but a 20-30k pound machine is more suited for that work.
  22. 4570Man

What to look for in a Skid Steer.

An excavator is better suited for taking out trees. A skid steer with a stump bucket will work as long as it’s dry enough to get traction. If you proceed with that plan the bigger the better. But an excavator is by far the best option.

    Building Lake Corona

I think a track CTL will compact material better than you give it credit for. If you put it down in 4-6” lifts and track it down with the right moisture you can make a tight pad. I’ve done pads that way that a loaded dump truck barely leaves a mark on.

What did you buy this week?

They had already tore the side skirting off it was buried so deep before Heavy D started with it. I’m not sure that getting timbers under it had any chance of happening. And Heavy D is selling entertainment not recovery. I bet a new back hatch was still cheaper than recovery.
  30. 4570Man

What did you buy this week?

To be fair he usually does those recoveries for free and I’m not sure how much chance there there ever was of getting that out without some damage. RVs weren’t designed to be stuck that severely from any point of view.

Do I need high flow aux?

The skid steer weighs 2 if not 3 times what the 25 hp tractor does. The hydraulic drive cutter isn’t as efficient as a shaft either. I doubt you have as much HP to the cutter as the 25 hp tractor has.
  32. 4570Man

Do I need high flow aux?

Most of my mowing experience is with a 75. It works acceptably good but it bogs a lot. I briefly mowed with my 88 hp Komatsu and it kept it up better. I have a SVL90 but I’ve never put the mower on it. I don’t think you’d be happy with the result going to a skid steer half the size.
  33. 4570Man

Do I need high flow aux?

High flow is really only useful if you buy a high flow mower and regular flow mowers work acceptably well. I’d be more concerned with the whole brush mowing plan. The Kubota 75s are at the bottom end of the acceptable HP for brush mowing IMO and the Deere 312 is considerably smaller.

Plumbing Question on 1/4 mile 2" buried PVC water line with Compression Connectors

I assume the OP isn’t using the 2” line at capacity and reduced it to a 3/4” tap at the end. That would make the velocity in the 2” line fairly slow and drastically lower the water hammer effect.

Modifying a dump trailer for "tailgating" stone?

The GVW is the important number. If the truck GVW and the trailer GVW add together to make 26001 pounds then you likely need a CDL. And a 1 ton dually may get you into trouble with a 14k trailer. Single wheel 1 tons are usually fine.

    PEX crimp tool?

You shouldn’t have to use many fittings anyway. It shouldn’t take over 2-3 per branch. And faucets have flow restrictions anyway that’s far lower than the pipe capacity. Maybe for a select few applications it might be a problem but for regular house plumbing it’s a non issue.

A cinch band crimper is much more compact than the band crimpers. A pex expansion tool completely cures the problem because they can expand it then stick it in the tight area. I made a 30 ft run with pex through a closed area by pushing a tape measure through then pulling a string back and...

My dad’s F-550 with a 12ft bed and coil springs will out turn my old model ones with leaf springs. My Volvo truck will significantly out turn all 3 of them. I had a tandem axle international before the Volvo and it would still turn sharper than the leaf spring fords.

Any track loader is going to have a DPF unless you buy an old one. The machines over 75hp still have the DPF in addition to requiring DEF fluid. In my opinion the DEF fluid is considerably more unreliable than just the DPF especially on machines that sit more than they work.
