They use a water spray to scare away animals.
Not for every garden but they work well for us.
A friend of mine bought something like that years ago to keep the deer skittish. His mother in-law came over to pick tomatoes.... :ROFLMAO:

I would consider that a bonus That will teach her to show up unannounced

They work well; I just hated the hose stretched across the lawn to the garden, so I gave up on them.

It's a good excuse to buy all the equipment necessary to trench water lines to the garden. ;)
When we have our house built and they run the water line for the house, I'm planning on having them drop two lines. One for a shop, and one for a frost proof spigot where we are planning on putting a garden.

We're planning on critters as well with a barn next to the shop, so that will give me water for troughs without having to drag a hose from the house.

We are fortunate that we live on sand. Years ago I took a plow share, welded it vertically to a quick attach plate, and used it as a cable plow to pull black poly water line about 8" deep out to the garden. It pulled very easily. In fact, once I got it pulled, I wanted to see how easy. I could pull it back and forth in the trench by hand. Anyhow, the garden is a bit uphill from the house. So I put a self-draining valve in a gravel pit at the low end. It's worked well for many years.
