I've heard that cheap plastic will rust.

BWAH, HA-HA!!!

And UV stabilisation
This one makes sense. I constantly read posters here complain about the high cost of vehicles, yet those same posters complain about cosmetic imperfections.

Our good old "cushy and pleasing" cars had carpet on the doors and squishy vinyl on the dash. And the cloth seats were as you would have on your living room couch.
Yeah man! This brings back memories of the '77 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme I bought new. The velveteen cushioned seats made my girl friend get naked. Hard to clean though.

And gave you a hefty static belt when you got out.............. the car not the girlfriend

Good thing that your parents had the plastic coverings on their couch when you brought her home to meet them. Now I understand why some people had that plastic.

Lots of contenders for that "honor"...20somethings with their riced out Civics, rednecks in huge (often diesel) pickups, etc.

I can't say I've seen any arrogant Suburu drivers...overly cautious, yeah but not arrogant. Around here it seems if you buy a toyota they make you sign a paper promising to never drive any faster than 10 mph under the limit before allowing you to drive off the lot.
The #1 most ticketed car in the US is the Subaru WRX. And they've brought back an Outback XT with a turbocharged engine, rather than the underpowered H4 most of them have. The H6 has been discontinued. Subaru is a mainstream brand now (#7 in the US market) so they're just another Crossover manufacturer.

As far as Toyota, not surprising. "Toyota: where driving fun goes to die."
