I have two acres. Two out of the 4 sides were fenced already on the property line. Plus a portion behind the house was boxed in with chain link fence for a small dog run, and spot for kids to play. That portion had rusted out posts and needed quite a bit of work.

About a year after I moved in, I cleaned up the back half of the yard that was over grown. Then got with my neighbor on the side that wasn't fenced.

I explained after pricing it out, it was cheaper to run steel drive stakes down our property line and continue the field fence then it would be to fix the chain link fence in the back yard.

So one Saturday morning the two of us got out there on our property line and ran a string line from the center of the property pin on the back corner to the front corner. We were both in agreement on where it was placed.

I then installed the fence to the line on my side of the property line. And tied the chainlink fence from each side of the house to the fences on the property line.

I have 1.5 acres fenced in for the dogs to run and kids to play. The property lines are clearly marked, so there isn't any dispute.

And to make it easier on my neighbor (76yo). I weed eat and blow the leaves off his side of the fence when I do my side. He occasionally walks the line, and hits it with a touch of herbicide to cut down on maintenance.

Along the portion that isn't fenced between our two properties we tend to share in the weed eating and mowing around the few trees on the property line.

About 12 years ago when we purchased our property, the previous owner left about 100 trees marked with ribbons and one neighbor asked me if I intended to have these trees cut (back then trees could be turned into cash) and I told him no.

That pleased him until I started to clean up the property to reduce the fuels (limb mostly dead branches on the trees to about 8'-12' from the ground and removing all of the ground fuels which took me about 6 summers and now it's never ending with winter downed trees, etc...).

This neighbor so liked his privacy he would never consider cleaning the fuels on his property, has since moved due to health reasons, new neighbors are slowly removing fuels.

I marked the bottom of some of "my trees" next to the ground with an orange spray can dot (about 2" dia.), and I was probably inside of the property line about 5'-10' because you could not see through the forest the property line stakes when standing next to the other one (about 500' apart).

He had a fit that I would mark my trees but I really think he did not want me to clean up my property, and I surely did not want to disturb his "dark forest".

I do understand the benefits of privacy but also to help reduce the fire risk, since now I can see a small portion of each neighbors house or garage.

And I also know enough that even if I clear cut my complete property, it is not a guarantee my structures will survive a wildfire event.

Reducing the fuels is sort of a comport zone only...

That's a tough situation. I love my privacy, but who wants their place to burn? Often when getting rid of or pruning trees, it's just a matter of getting used to it, which happens quite quickly. I guess if you don't want to see your neighbor, best buy a thousand acres somewhere. I live in the middle of 100 acres and that's not nearly enough distance to avoid possible problems.

Agree with you, and the main thing for me is I can still peeeeeeeeeeee off any of my decks surrounding 3/4 of the house without shocking any neighbors unless they are using binoculars for the wrong reason instead of watching birds...

Helped my friend finish reshingling his house yesterday. Has an acre but neighbors house painfully close. First got asphsiciated (sp?) up on the roof from the guys wood stove smoke. He has it going non stop. Can smell it, just getting out of my truck in the driveway. Then the old hearing impaired guy started up his wood splitter. OMFG!!!!

Probably they were using Google Earth to find your house... and are out in the Mojave someplace trying to string someone up on a cactus.

Yep. Google has my house about 7 miles south of where it is. Every so often I have a tradesman trying to find me, finallyi call and then refuse to believe that google could be wrong...even though the address is on the mail box. addresses here are by the mile and hundreths there of from the beginning of the road. Thus if I have the adress I am looking for, a quick look at any mile post will tell me how far I am from that location.

Same here, and few will believe they can't get here via GPS, always at their peril.

My lovely neighbor has bamboo leaning 40' over into my property and driveway. He promised to remove it. Once his illegal workers began, he realized it was going to cost him more than he thought, so he stopped. He also directs all his garage downspouts across his driveway onto my property.
The guy is a complete A-hole and one day I will get my chance to repay him.

Good story yet with all due respect; you are in the wrong. (Also your neighbor, if he took them up as you state.)

Furthermore, most states have laws against disturbing survey monuments.
Agreed... IF, my neighbor did that, I'd more than likely file a police report of a theft...

Lucky for me, (and them) I don't have a neighbor who thinks like that.

One things for sure, those post would go back up!!

Nah... Cactus are too short to hang anyone here in the Mojave. You are probably thinking Sugaros in Arizona. We use Joshua trees here in the Mojave. :D
