Car-Proof Field Fence Posts

a regular old fence to keep live stock in (cows, sheep, etc..), is not really visible during night time. you might see a post if that along the road at night time. little reflectors are not always easy to see either.

if you are really having a good amount of problems. see about getting actual arrow signs placed around the corner via township, county, state. errr what ever road belongs to.

perhaps get a "yellow blinking caution" light. setup for the area. if it is costing you a 2000 bucks every couple years. is it worth paying for installation?

or get mini speed bumps. errrr there not speed bumps but short little bumps a few of them, that when drive over shake and rattle your vehicle. and also make noise. there all over the place around here, on back roads and roads not really traveled a lot. when ever a stop sign comes up. you end up having to drive over 3 patches of these mini bumps before actually making it to the stop sign.

goto a local township meeting for your area. or county meeting if you live on a county road. or contact the road commissioner for township or county.

never had to deal with insurance company and folks taking out posts via cars. but for an insurance company to claim posts are shearing or will not cover the damage seems like an attempt to weasel out of paying up. the fence is not a "guard rail" thought i honestly have no idea, what comes up as being a classified as a guard rail / dead stop setup.

Get some railroad ties, they make good corner posts. Put 3 upright in L shap, and angle 2 from top of corner, down to bottom of other 2 uprights. Use some large spikes and lag bolts.

Dave

A good "H" corner is much better. Put those angled ties or other brace horizontal near top and then a wire from the top of the line post to bottom of corner post. wind it up tight and that corner will be there until the posts rot.

As far as reflector go, get the DOT SEMI- trailer reflector tape. ( red/ white)
(probably napa/ carquest dealer, truck shops or truck stops etc.) that is mandatory
on semi trailers these days. There are similar looking/ styled reflector tape like at harbor freight,
but it is NOT the DOT REGULATION reflector tape for semi requirements.
( it says DOT APPROVED) in the tape. ( or something very similar its been awhile)
It is VERY VIVID looking for compromised visibility situations.

set up a fence panel section or 2x6 or 2x8 rails
to mount the reflector tape to. Maybe do a stacked v pattern or diagonal layout.

/ / / / / / \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ ( set the angle or pattern at your whim)

/ / / / / / \ \ \ \ \ \ \

the V type pattern idea layout varied to fit space

\______\ ______\______\ ___ _ /______ /______/______/

\______\_______\_______\/_______ /______ /______/

\ ______\_______\____________ /_______/______/

\_______\ _______\________ /_______/ _____/

\_______\________\____/_______/______/

( underscore used to try and hold spacing, not perfect but the basic idea)

The dot reflector tape should be easy to see if someone is "conscious"
and sober........

the low rocks and adding a sand trap should keep them mired or High centered for a bit too.

Good Luck

PS just a thought
put the reflectors as close to the road as a fence can be or right of way allows,
if the fence is set back from that spot now.

I would get some steel pipe large enough to place wooden fence post in. Cement those into the ground with a foot or so sticking up. If a car drove through your fence the steel pipe would slow the car down and then you could just drop new post into the steel pipe.

How about erecting a billboard and then you could sell advertising space to pay for it to be rebuilt.

Okay, the name kind of says it. I have a relatively simple field fence and I keep having an issue of (presumably) drunk morons not noticing that the road ends and crashing through my corner posts. It's been the same spot and I really thought that 8-9" round treated corners would be sufficient to at least disable the car so I can have their insurance pay for the repairs. In this last instance the post sheared right at ground level.

Used power poles don't seem to be an option in my area so what else can I use? I am really tempted to try and make my own bollards but I'm thinking those might only work in between the corners as opposed to holding the fence load because I'm not sure how to brace them together. The fence is right up against the right of way so as I understand it putting up a barrier myself would open up myself to liability and the County isn't interested on putting up one of their own.

All thoughts are appreciated I'd like to fix this in the next day or so. Thanks

Set a post about one foot into the ground. Attach four pieces of angle iron at 90 degrees horizontal at ground level and spaced evenly Around the post. Make sure they are well attached.

You should find the next vehicle intruder nicely impaled and waiting for you.

Why not dig out a large section of the field, rebuild the fence around it and backfill the pit with river sand or pea gravel, if it will stop an out of control semi going downhill, it will surely stop a drunk before they get to the fence. You may have to kill the grass occasionally to keep it functional.

He probably figured this out already... the original post was from 8 years ago... I do wonder what the final outcome was...

Most readymix yards have 'bunker blocks' available. Ones I've seen are about 2x2x6' & weigh 2 tons or more. Stackable & have rebar lifting eyes. They just pour waste concrete from returning trucks into the forms so they're really cheap - like $50 or less. Would make a heck of a cornerpost :)

LOL....just saw post before mine & didn't notice this was an ancient thread....oops
