My new-to-me (but made with USA steel) deck-over equipment trailer had the spare just sitting on top of the lid to the built in a-frame storage box. Needless to say that is a bad spot, having to either remove, or lift up a very heavy tire, anytime I want to get something out of the storage area.
I was wondering if anyone has thought of, or made use of a pickup's style spare tire winch/carrier idea, and mounted one to a trailer and just kept the spare between the main frame rails? I would think it would make it more theft resistant, as most opportunistic criminals would not even think to look there. and keeping it out of the sun is a plus in the south.
I might have to work out where the lowering crank/tool goes, (may have to drill hole in main frame, but they pierce the frames on the lower height deckovers, so I am not really worried about one hole of less than an inch)
So am I a creative genius, or a complete fool? I can not believe I am the first to have thought of this. I know some tractor trailers carry a spare under the deck, but that is just a carrier, not a winch/lowering system as far as I know. And I doubt most t/t drivers would be changing a tire themselves, they would call a service provider.
What issues might I have, what am I missing, or why would this be a bad idea?
thanks in advance to all who help.
