George, if you don't mind, please give everyone the story, I for one found it very interesting. When you get a chance, send me a pic of the view, would love to see that as well!

For whatever reason, I never thought of old houses as being in Florida.

"I never thought of old houses as being in Florida"

You are correct!
My profile shows: " Northeast & FL".
The house is NOT in Florida.

House looks nice, but in almost 300 years I'm sure much has been replaced, windows, roof, siding, etc. The old church wasn't maintained like that.

I was going to say, the roof and siding seem to be in great shape!

Why not?

Founded in 1565 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro Mené§*dez de Avil駸, St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the contiguous United States....

I was thinking about St. Augustine too. Virginia has some of the oldest buildings. A friend lives in a house in Concord, Va built in the 17th century. The main house was built in mid 1700s, but this is a small log cabin. Wish I had pictures, but getting up to the loft two bedrooms there are logs sticking out of wall with no railing.
Our neighbor growing up had 2500 acres, three cabins on the place. By the 1970s two started falling apart, gone by the 80s.
Unoccupied houses fall apart.

Don't even get me going on West Virginia and coal. West Virginia coal wars - Wikipedia

Read up on it, you might be surprised what you find in our own history.

At this point, all my readings are going "south", generally before 1850:D
