TC29D Won稚 Start

I have been having difficulty getting my TC29D started. I purchased a new battery thinking it would solve my problem. However it still won稚 turn over. Tested battery and it is getting its 12 volts, the only indicator light that comes on when attempting to start is the battery light. My glow plug doesn稚 light. This usually means one of the wires under the left rear tire has become unplugged. I致e checked these wires and they are secure. While sitting and trying to start I致e also tried cycling through each of the three ranges as this has worked in the past. During this recent attempt one out of 15 times it did work and the glow light briefly returned, I say briefly because after trying to crank engine it vanished again. I知 not electricity or mechanical inclined. I知 trying to avoid the dealership as this is an appx 15 year old tractor and my dealer is more interested in me replacing rather than reliability repairing. I appreciate any help this forum can provide.

Check all the starter interlock switches. They close the circuit to the starter solenoid to allow the battery to supply power to the starter motor.. Alternately, you can jump the solenoid directly from the battery and if the engine turns over, you'll know it's an interlock switch. DO NOT TRY THIS WITHOUT MAKING SURE THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL! If you don't get a glow plug light when you try to start, check the glow plug controller wires and look for a blown fuse also.

Step 1 Get an assistant to sit on the seat and attempt to start the tractor.
Step 2 Get a voltmeter, and measure the voltage on the large input lug (BIG red cable) as the assistant attempts to start tractor. Is it a nominal 12 volts there when the tractor is attempted to be started. Measure from this lug to a clean chassis ground. If it falls under 10 volts or so when a start attempt is made, you have cable/connections problems. In other words the cable, Positive OR negative is no longer a wire and has become a resistor.

Step 3. Get back with us.

My best guess:

1) Bad positive or ground cable

2) Something wrong with a safety switch.

3) ignition problem

Thanks for info: I had assistant attempt to start when I was measuring volts. No drop in volts. I also tried testing from solenoid volts dropped when attempting to start. Does that provide any info?

Not really.. You checked that all your ground cables are tight correct? Ground to the chassis etc..? The fact that this has happened before and you were able to move the range selector and got it to start would make me think you have a bad safety switch on your range selector that has finally failed for good.

Checked interlock switches, all seemed fine although one appeared to have some corrosion residue. Attempted to jump the solenoid, nothing. I checked all the fuses I could find, but I知 not entirely sure where the glow plug controller is. Any additional thoughts.

How about trying to crank the tractor while moving your gear selector from low range to high and neutral back and forth to see if it tries to start?

Good suggestion, I致e tried that as that has worked in the past. But not this time.
